Also got a pic with the votex lights on and a pic showing a crack that I made in my driver mirror, Luckily it's the broken one that does not adjust no more and need a new one anyway.

been digging old threads that claim on SPI polos and mine specifically can take a throttle body from a golf mk3 and looking at all the connections I couldnt see how that was possible but after digging around a bit more I found that what they meant is i can do a straight swap with other monopoint injection units from golf mk3's.

Anyway I have ordered the biggest one in true greedy style which will probably see me lose about 5 or more mpg but the biggest gain in power. Its from the 90hp golf mk3 1.8 and is seemingly a straight swap and this also looks like the case.

I doubt ill see good gains until a high lift cam and suitable exhaust system and what not is acquired but I thought I would order it while the money is spare. In the end if i can reach GT power ill be very very happy with it after all I can also decat my car with the year so I think it makes it that bit more reachable.

Today my golf injection arrived and I fitted it, it took swapping some connection parts of my old injection unit which were straight swap, I then had to put the throttle wheel the other way round and it was a massive hassle tbf, straight swap bolt off bolt on it wasn't.

Review is: the sound is amazing

, not just an induction roar but the engine has a slight growl that's more amplified than before. Throttle response is a bit too responsive and I need to get used to it but it likes to rev a lot more. It really is noticeable.

I took a picture of the difference in inlet size

post-918226-1436894647_thumb.jpg

I will take a picture to show that what nige feared about mani hole being smaller is not, and that luckily the inlet size on manifold is now exactly the same size of that on the new injection

Well the AP 60/50 spring and shock kit arrived, seems to be a bit on the stiff side when pushing down a shock but a lot easier to push down than the TA-technix was so hopefully a lot more comfortable....going to fit the rears right now!

this is the box..

This is some of the fine AP Suspension advertising

So the rears went on nicely, they came with all bushes and washers etc unlike the Ta technix so now i have loads of spares as i stocked up before it arrived :|.

seems a bit softer than the TA stuff but i can tell its not going to be a mega comfortable set up still. never mind, its fine on normal roads. ill crack on with fronts tomorrow. going for a personal best..got the rears done in an hour dead on 8-)

oh and one thing I forgot to replace....bumpstops.

All new Suspension fitted, new brake discs fitted, New track rod end and steering arm for non adjustable side fitted and new lower track arms fitted.

As my gf's dad says may as well Jack up a radiator cap and put a new car under it

Just need to hammerite front arches and done sticking my head in the wheel arch.

Before M.O.T day I have to fit a new driver side mirror and sort my throttle cable, May bleed brakes as the brake pedal is a tad soft then I honestly cant think of anything it can possibly fail on...fingers are crossed that my preparations are all that is needed

Got the breadvan booked in for some new rubber on weekend, Falken 155/70r13 which score A on wet grip which I think is important on an old polo!

Also got mirrors reserved from retrowheels

New center caps on the way

New top caps

And a new throttle cable ready to adapt.

It's having its MOT before 20th August but not booked and away on holiday next week. I feel as if I've covered all bases before it's MOT though.

The prep has involved, New shocks, spring's, top mounts, brake discs (pads were new a couple month back) New lower track arms new track rod end NS and steering arm for OS. Rocker gasket leak sorted new tyres and New mirrors. Engine runs perfect, cooling system is also faultless and no blows in the exhaust, only thing I'm unprepared for is emissions I think...going for no advisories! And of course a pass.

Wish me luck

Throttle cable is working lovely now and as should, bought a European replacement with a shorter rod at the pedal so I could join the two cables at that point which meant I could have sheathing run straight all the way to the bulkhead (can totally understand if nobody has a clue what I'm talking about) but is strong and the accelerator pedal is nice and light and I also get the full opening so ticks all round.

Stuck new top caps on and went for a test drive with the new tyres on too. She grips like F**K In the wet and suspension and steering is now spot on. No other words to describe although I haven't been down rough roads yet.

Other than that I am going to fit my replacement mirror and fix my rocker gasket leak...finally! Fit my rear number plate and send it for a M.O.T

okay so good and bad news...I got rid of the knock!. I started bare with the suspension again and because I have an impact gun now I managed to tighten everything a little bit more that i have changed so far. tightened the lower arms and steering arms and I still had the knock so i took suspension out put the febi top mounts in and used the 2p method and now my knock is completely gone...couldnt believe it.

one of the top mounts bearings was a little bit lumpy but still smooth so i dont know if it was that or the 2p that did it as it was a solid knock before.

the bad news is that in the process of doing this I have split both grease pockets on my bottom ball joints when my lower arms were recently new. this is probably because my ball joint seperator is the old cow foot type.

Next up then is to fix the rocker leak again but I'm waiting on a new cover as mine must be warped and always leaks in the same area.

I might chuck it in for an MOT before i do bottom ball joints again just to see whats the coo.

I need a standard spi throttle cable as I'm taking the 1.8 golf throttle body off. as much as I love the noise etc its using stupid amounts of fuel and it seems the pump cant keep up or something as it feels like its running out of petrol after having the foot down too long and stuff. Even if my pump is on the way out and thats why I'm not shedding out on a new pump just to accomodate the golf body when decent money can be spent on a GT or ABD engine or something similar.

The love is returning for the bready, didn't think it was going to happen as even despite its problems peeing me off I was tired of looking at it aesthetically too.

Really close to on the road now and I hope I haven't jinxed it. My new rocker cover is promised to be in transit on Monday so that will sort the leak hopefully.

Took a picture of it and think it looks amazing and I know it ain't the best and it hasn't been half a project to some but fairly proud atm of it.

Any feedback aesthetically good or bad is welcome and suggestions too.

Got my five speed box currently sitting in the boot, it came with a 5 speed mount but I'm not sure if this is different to the polo one as this came off a golf.

Anyone who can post a picture of a 5 speed gearbox mount on my thread I would be grateful so I can compare

Just because I'm that good...

Part number 20 bottom right is what you need.

Well i got a few pictures of the gearbox to keep this a tiny bit more interesting than it has been lately but there is some car part porn to come up after the gearbox picture I promise...Also I'm guessing that the mount thing on the rear of the box is not needed on a polo? just thought i would ask before it is binned

IMAG0386_zpspvdinf0m.jpg

IMAG0387_zpsytrnewzo.jpg

And now for the car part porn... My cam cover arrived FINALLY. It doesnt have the breather I asked for but it has been tapped to accept one so I have ordered a Union to fit the thread and then I can attach some hose or a filter. I also ordered a bunch of M6 allen head bolts on different lengths as i cba to check the length on the current bolts...The allen head should fit snug in the recess whereas a hex head wouldnt be able to seal and may look poo.

Providing it is flat and a good proper fit as they assured me it is, it should get rid of my leak problem too and this shouldnt warp being that its cast and not pressed steel which is notorious for bending when overtightening.

few sets on ebay search "085 seals "

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Volkswagen-Golf-Polo-Jetta-085-Gearbox-Oil-Seal-Set-/110998986262?hash=item19d80e1e16

vw still do them , i think the flange ones are £15ish plus vat each so a fair bit dearer

you can also do the starter bush

and maybe pop out the clucth arm and clean and regrease the bushings on that , mine were grubby

as you can see some pieces need tidying up although I'm not too concerned as I'm looking for a replacement engine anyway and a bigger tidy up with wires etc and a deep clean will be done as well

Project plans have changed just a tad since taking a travel to crawley where I met Kiran to see about an engine. 150 bob later I have a GT block a five speed mount and an SPI unit for the current engine! Bargain if you ask me as I also got a head chucked in with the possibility of double valve springs so will check that later too. Just need to get everything else now but I blew 100 quid on a night out in reading last night so I set myself back a bit [emoji52]

Kiran was kind enough to take me out in his GT which was lovely and much pokier so I think I'll be pleased for a while with a GT conversion...his car also made me really want rocco seats which are sooo comfortable compared to mine.

Thanks again for everything Kiran your a top guy [emoji106]

Well I took the battery from the mx5 to start up then quickly swap the batteries round so I could go for a spin and see how she is.

20151006_152653_zpseai4kp7d.jpg

I was brimming with excitement but the battery ran out and sadly that's as far as I got [emoji20]

I ran it for a few minutes and I think I know for definite that the rocker gasket isn't leaking, I done it twice with the new cover and can clearly see a teeny dribble coming down the cambelt side then coming round to the alternator. So pretty safe to say that it is a cam oil seal. No worries as I have one..somewhere.

Also oil breather at rear of block is split but other than that and a brake bleed the car is completely done for now

Edited by wizardmanjm

  • Author

This has officially been booked in for an MOT for the 31st October...a lot later than expected but it should give me plenty of time to sort the oil leak...if i do the oil seperator at the back of the engine first I am sure ill get away with the small bit that oozes out the cam oil seal as I'm pretty sure a minor leak is just an advisory. Who knows I might even do the seal too.

The reason I booked it so late is because I am paid then and I can rectify any problems for the free next day retest should it fail.

Feeling..very.....nervous.

  • Author

Another thing before MOT...needed to bleed my brakes so rather than talk about doing it I just went ahead and did it.

This is the second bottle BTW that I just got from the fronts

20151008_193400_zpssdqh6l3m.jpg

I done it so no air bubbles were coming out and no dirty fluid so it ran clear. The pedal is much stiffer but only reaches its full stiffness at just over a third the way down...is this normal? I remember my 106's pedal got a bit stiffer than that. Used about 1 and 3/4 litres of new fluid to be sure it was good.

EDIT: I know I update this too much. I'll try to keep updates to a minimum lol
