Hi all!

Had a productive afternoon, I've been pulling things out left, right and centre to establish what I need to be doing and I'm glad to say the list of things still wrong with the car is now far smaller than the list of things I've fixed!

I have a quick question to pose some of the more 'expert' among you. I pulled off the passenger side door card today to get a good look at what was preventing the passenger side window from working. The motor is good, the sliders are fine, but the wiring has been absolutely pulled to hell. I've got some photos of the damage that I'm going to try and include in this post.

What I want to know is, is the wiring regulator kit you can pick up on Amazon what I need to repair this?

It says 2/3 door front right, but I figure as it's the electric window on the front passenger door of my 5 door, it would still be okay?

You need the repair kit for the 5 door as the door is shorter than the 3 door and so the cables need to be shorter

This one says left hand side, 4/5 door models. Would that suffice?

Have a look on ebay as I've got a feeling the clips make it left or right sided ?

I'm going to a scrapyard tomorrow to try and dig out a parcel shelf, so I might just take some tools with me and have a look for a regulator if there's a Polo there!

I know when I bought my Ibiza 5 door ( same units as the Polo) both front windows were duff and there was a definate difference in the two kits

I had no luck at the scrapyard. Found a full regulator for a 6n2 but I couldn't dislodge it, wasn't even sure if the 6n2 regulator was the same (although it looked it) and I had a glance around for Ibiza's too but no such luck.

DID get the parcel shelf I've been hunting for though, bit of a bargain for 3 quid. Just needed a bloody good clean!

What would you recommend from here? The £8.99 one on Amazon doesn't have great reviews, but would it suffice?

The 6N2 mechanism is the same just the motor is different on some models as they have the "one touch down" facility and the motor has a 12 pin connector not the 2 pin you have, but you can just swop the motor over.

I would have a look on ebay for the repair kits, plenty on there and from memory the ones I bought the guy gave a link to a youtube guide on replacing the drive wires

Yeah, I'm sure the motor still works, and it can be slid up and down manually, but obviously the drive wires have snapped so that seems to be the issue. I will have a hunt on eBay then!

Do you have any idea where I could get my hands on a replacement foam insert for under the door card? Can't seem to find any and mine's been cut and hacked and is just generally a mess.

If you can't find some in a scrap car, which is doubtful ! The part number is 3A0 867 201H it's a sheet 1100mm x 600mm x 2mm Other option is what I've used is the silverfoil backed insulation used under laminate flooring

All of the scrap cars I saw today already had it pulled out, or it was as torn to shreds as mine is!

I'll have a look up for that part number, I've ordered a regulator repair kit from ebay and hopefully that'll do the trick.

So I had a crack at this, made a complete hash of it and now the window is propped up with wood.

I just couldn't get the wiring to sit nice and flushed, ran out of time, tried to bodge it and made the window much worse.

Just gonna pop it into VW Helston, I think.

VW came back with a quote in excess of £300 for the regulator, motor and labour. Could anybody tell me if this regulator would do the trick? I've emailed Euro car parts to see if it's pre-assembled or not.

It looks like the correct one just it doesn't state if its for a 3 or 5 door? as they are different,

This one says "Doors 4, Regulator Type With Motor" but I can't work out if that actually includes the motor.

The first one I linked apparently doesn't have the motor.

VW quoted me £88 for the regulator, £173 for the motor and £108 for labour.

At the moment it's propped up with wood and I'm not happy with it at all. But the £369 they've quoted me is £11 short of what I paid for the car.

Says it's all still working properly, and it was only £22. HUGELY hoping that this will sort it and be the end of this.

Personally I would not bother trying to re cable these, as it's a lot of hassle and I'm sure would take at least 2 attempts at it to get it right.

I would always go for a second hand unit, as you said above it's around £20 for one, problem with breakers yards is you would need a battery or jump starter to put power into it to get the window down enough to get it out without breaking it, also this way you can test it.

Once you get the used one, put it on a table and get it a once over, clean it and re grease the cables etc this way it shouldn't need anything else later on.

Also, we'll worth checking the wiring inside the rubber boot between the door and the a pillar, VERY common for the wires to break inside that due to movement. If you find a Brocken wire then at this stage it's way easier to take the whole door loom out as you already have the door card off. Just in clip all the plugs and pull it out of the a pilar side. Then chop away the Brocken parts and solder on a slightly thicker piece of wire a little bit longer then the piece you chopped of, then heat shrink over it and fit it all back. Done a good few of these and haven't had any problems with any of them so far.

Yeah, I discovered just how much hassle it was! Only to then find that the problem with the grinding was the motor anyway.

The unit that I've bought is a genuine VW part and the guy I bought it from seems very honest, good feedback etc.

As it's all assembled I can just pull out the now mangled mess and bolt in the new one.

The stuff about the loom is confusing without looking at it, but I'll pull it apart and have a look. I'm sure it will become fairly apparent once I'm looking at it. :)
