Hi peeps, i am beginning the process of striping my 1.3 MH engine and then rebuilding enhancing as many parts i can.

I've found its not the most common engine and hard to find aftermarket parts for, sometimes even standard!

So my question is, does anyone have any recommendations, links or tips for tuning & sourcing aftermarket parts.? also gearbox & clutch included

I'm not after engine conversions, tons of electronics or turbos!

I'm taking the route of old school tuning to hopefully be achieving a torquey high reving solid engine as it is what i know best and easiest to fix!

my bucket list so far:

Webber dcoe twin 40s

piper 268 degree camshaft

adjustable vernier pully

ported, polished & matched head

electronic fuel pump

4-2-1 SS exhaust manifold with straight through pipe & backbox

possible flywheel lightening

my target is to achieve 60-70bhp (could be optimistic but challanges are fun) although I've never read about tuning these engines a its easier to fit a AFH or something similar.

I've not had my polo long so not completely clued up on them so any help would be much appreciated

some may think tuning a 1.3 is a waste of time but I'm after a sweet little fun car to drive at its max, not a tarmac shredding monster that u can use 50% power :P

That list looks pretty good, you might want to lighten/balance the bottom end too.

You'll achieve way over 70hp with that setup, especially if the head is done well!

i would hope for 90-100 once i can afford a custom made exhaust and get it dyno set up sweet.

Tbh honest whiles it's out I would look at swapping the bottom end for a 1.4 abd unit everything bolts up all u need to change is ther rear water pipe if the block doesn't come with it. No hp gains but the increase in torque is more than worth the 100 quid for an engine then all the mods u do will add up for a very drivable set up havering more torque lower down and lasting a lot higher up the rev range.

that is the later model fuel injected engine? all straight fit 100%?

The ABD is from a mk3 golf.

The actual crankshaft will fit into a 1.3, but I'm not sure if you'll need the rods too as in theory they should be shorter.

One thing I will mention is that it'll change the characteristics of the engine ; my ABD has plenty of torque but won't rev as freely as my friends tuned 1.3, but this is just something that is typical of long-stroke engines.

And yes the complete ABD will bolt in.

It's the biggest you can go in terms of engines that are based on the 1.0/1.3 engines (it's identical from tr outside).

Vernier sprockets are a great idea BUT they can only make an improvement if they are correctly set, so care needs to be taken in setting the valve timing.

Mk2 coupe if you are abd won't rev freely you are doing something wrong never had an issue with mine had to fit a hard cut limiter cause it would just keep reving if u let it. Lightened fly and head work will see u right.

It'll rev to 7k, it just has a low-Rev power curve and doesn't need to be revved to make decent power

Oh I get u mine revved just as quick as any 1.3 I suppose the 272 helped a lot

Yeah probably! Mine was still on a GT cam.

My mates 1.3 makes power between like 3k and 6k, mine was about 1.5k to 4.5k. It's still Rev well, just stop pulling as hard.

The cam must make a big diffence then mine had the smoothest power curve and never stopped making power all the way up to 7500 but never ran at that just dyno fun.

As i haven't driven my car i dont know what the rev range is like and how fast it revs up. could anyone recommend how much to lighten the flywheel by? i geuss its a good 20kg haven't weighted it yet. cheers

5.2kg standard.

You can use a flywheel down to about 2.9kg but the throttle becomes essentially a power on/off switch and the idle will likely need raising.

It'll need balancing if taking weight off an existing one.

what would be the ideal weight to bring it down too without creating a poor idle?

Not sure - maybe down to 4kg.

Though I just found a custom item on German eBay with more mass at the outside rim which is only 2.4kg and claims good idle.

5.2kg christ I'm weak 20kg lmao D: so i would be safe to go around 3.0 - 3.2kg. dont want to remove much material from the center as thats where the power is transferd from so more chance of cracking.

No. I don't think you can safely take that much off a standard flywheel.

If a flywheel shatters it will cause destruction and maybe death or serious injury

Hello! I have '86 Golf with 1.3, idk what the code of the engine is, and I want to know if I put electronic inhection, will the block withstand some boost. Have a great day!

If the rocker cover is held on my 3 bolts down the middle, not 10 round the outside, it will already have electronic injection. 1986 would normally be the MH engine, which has it. 

Anyone know how this turned out since its been bumped

It's carburated for sure. But I want to swap a fuel injection and put a turbo, but I dont know is the block can handle boost. If someone knows please tell me. 

If your gonna go turbo use bike carbs and keep the dizzy and loom you already have 

 

People have boosted aav blocks and they took it, how hard is the question

 

Increasing power decreases the engines life 

How will work turbo and carbs, and the engine block is Mh, not aav. And this for the engine life is obvious.
