easiest engine swap for 6n (not 16v)

Featured Replies

what would be an easy engine swap that's pretty much a direct fit or with little fettling. I was looking at getting a 1.8 turbo donor car for a conversion or maybe pushing the boat out and trying to find an R32 golf as a donor. I know a tt has been done but sounds like an awful amount of work.

I don't want to do a 16v no offence to people that have one or have done one but for the amount of work it is doing an engine change I would like more of an upgrade.

VR6 Golf??

VR6 Corrado??

All those conversions will need fabrication work carried out on the Polo and parts made, for example drive shafts.

Then you have the issue of the wiring loom etc.

Nothing that I would describe as being easy.

Depends on your budget as well. You can pick up an Audi A3 1.8T for peanuts now but good luck picking up a Golf R32 for under £5k.

Me personally I wouldn't bother with a VR6, you'll be better off with a 1.8T I think.

But bare in mind none of these conversions will be as easy as plug and play.

Thanks for the reply. I thought because I had seen so many golf 1.8 turbo polos that its a direct fit. I didn't think of another Audi so thanks for the A3 idea.

I was looking at getting something crash damaged where it is destroyed but engine in tact, something with rear damage for example or roof cut off in an accident. I wouldn't be attempting this my self but wanted to make as little work as I could for the person that would be doing it.

Thanks again!

Anyone else got any ideas?

Just been doing some more research and it does seem like loads of work!

However I've just seen a 6n2 GTI 1.6 turbo running 273hp on the dyno. Are these engines loads of work to put in.. Are there any big modifications needed for this?

I can imagine a 6n2 gti I easier than a 1.8t golf/A3

Is a 16v a straight swap? Pretty much everything else is. I'm going to have to go down this route if everything else needs customisation.

If you get the complete wiring loom, ECU, key, transponder and all that then the 16v is just a straight swap.

Easiest way to do it would be to get an MOT failed 6n 16v or 6n2 GTI.

Or you could go down the bike carb route which removes the need for the complete loom and ECU and matching key etc.

Thanks for that!

Do you mean a 6n2 GTI is a straight swap as well? How does getting bike carbs remove the need for the loom, ECU and keys for these engines? I just looked on ebay before I read this and bike carbs are pretty cheap.

Anyone seen a bike carb sticky on here? If they are so cheap why haven't more people done it? What's the downside?

There's a couple of topics in the FAQ's at the top of this section all about bike carbs, what models to get etc.

Cheers! What would I need to buy if I was buying from a parts car for the conversion?

Just engine wise not for carbs.. For example, I've been looking at 6n2 gti engines.
