Door handles

My 6n2 door handles are really faded, can I swap them and the locks easily? I've found some second hand brighter ones but I want my existing locks?

on a 6n2 the door handel is just one bolt,no need to remove the door card, the bolt is on the side of the door nest to the latch.

the locks i am not so sure about i think you can but wait till someone els backs this up

As above for removal, for the lock barrel, with the handle off put the key in the lock twist and then it should just pull out

You will have to remove the fork piece, then a spring comes out and the paddle comes off.

It's a little fiddly, but it's defiantly doable.

There are a lot of videos on YouTube of how to do it, search vw lock repair.

Also, why not just reprint your current handles?

Thanks for the guide, managed to do it up until a point, problem now..I don't have the key for the new locks so the main barrel is still stuck in.

I don't want to paint because it ends up costing more and I'm bad at it haha

It's the laquer that's making it look worse and then the paints faded. Any way of brightening them up without paint?

Ok I rubbed a bit of fine sandpaper on the laquer and it went down to the primer straight away so now my original ones will deffo need paint or to be replaced! Oops

I've refitted the handle but when I pull it it doesn't open the door?

Take it off and refit, making sure that all of the parts of the handle are definitely flushed together and not sticking out anywhere. When I put my 6n door handles back on the first time, the handle didn't seem to sit quite as snug as it should, the pull part was ever so slightly separated from the lock part, and it wouldn't open. Also check that the metal clip around the inside of the handle is still connected properly, as that's the part that makes the pull part possible.

I'm pretty sure that the 6n2 handles are basically the same as the 6n, and this worked for me.

Exactly what it's like on mine...I'll have another go :-)

Hope that sorts it! It's always nice when something's a simple fix.

This is how it sits one I put it in. And the handle doesn't in clasp the door. Is there a certain way to put it in?

I just fiddled with mine until eventually it sat flush. Does the handle sit like that when it's not actually on the door?

There's a kind of metal clasp that goes around the two parts of the inside Of the handle, and that's what creates resistance when you pull on the door handle. If I remember rightly that wasn't sitting correctly on mine, and when I fiddled with it It Sat flush again.

No it's weird it sits fine off the door but as soon as I put it in it's all wonky.

Re-read the edit on my post and see if that helps. Make sure everything is all lined up as you put the handle back on, as mine slipped a few times before I got it right. Mostly just trial and error I suppose

Oh thank god I've done it!

Once you've got the handle in you have move it as far right as you can so you clear the metal latch and then slide left and the metal latch goes inside the 'hook' thing.

It opens and locks all fine. Apart from it doesn't lock with the remote button..but that's for another day! Thanks for your help!

That's probably what I ended up doing in the end, it's a while ago!

Sorry I couldn't help any better. Glad you got it sorted :D

Incidentally, how did you go about removing the lacquer, painting and retreating the door handle? I was thinking about colour matching mine, so they're white as opposed to black.

Well to be honest it was a pain but if you're patient it's worth the saving of sending to get pro done. The finish on mine is good apart from I needed more colour layers. But I needed to use

the car so had to rush job it...not a good idea.

I used a couple of guides to help me..the second one is pretty comprehensive.

HI

I'VE JUST DONE MY LOCKS ON MY CAR ALL YOU DO IS PUT THE KEY IN THE DOOR HANDLE AND TURN 45 DEGREES TO UNLOCK THEN IT SHOULD JUST PULL OUT. I HAD TO REPLACE MY SPRING AS BROKEN BUT THAT'S A DIFFERENT FORUM TO THIS. BUT I MUST SAY I GOT ALL MY INFO ON HERE THANKS TO ALL....

FRED

Djflintestone147 - If it comes out when you turn it, it means it's broken. And you will need a repair kit.

Polome, is your colour by any chance LP3G? Our 6n2 has the same lacquer problem all over it and it keeps coming through in random places. I've had to carbon wrap the roof as it had almost entirely flaked off. Temporary measure but it's only until summer when I can give it a re spray.

Same thing on the bonnet, as soon as you touch it with sand paper it goes through to primer. Bonnet bra covers that mess :)

I wonder if it was a paint defect ?

Also for future reference, there are two types of lock on 6n, an early type which very easy to work on, the paddle just hooks through the barrel over a washer. And the late type above which requires a lot of patience to repair - see YouTube, same as mk4 golf.

The key word being a LOT of patience. Or a complete lack of and a LOT of swearing, as was the case when I did it. And to think I have to do it again soon as my drivers side is starting to seize.

Hello,

i've now got a 1999 6n, someone has put really cheap door handles on with an entirely different key to the ignition, it feels like its going to bend as well so i'd rather change it if possible.

How can i go about putting on another 'proper' set so the key matches the ignition?

thanks

Liz

The whole handle or just the barrel? Could you get a blank barrel and have the key you have for the ignition matched to it?

The part number for the lock barrel is 1H0837061G and the part number for the handle is 6N0837207D. The handles are on eBay all the time. (They appear in my recommended items a lot because I've ordered the lock repair kit 4 times now.)

Here's a guide from the dealer manual 6N 6N2 Front Door Locks.doc

Ok cool thanks, the key i have is bent already has the brand KL on it and i'm not sure i trust it and don't have a spare it seems really cheap! .

How to i get the key matched to it? i would also need a spare cut as well
