Hi All

Just thought i would introduce myself as Eric,a new member from Birmingham. At my age i have had far to many cars to mention here but a few months ago i bought an X reg 1.4 sri Polo with 92000 on the clock. This is my very first vw car and i must admit so far i am very impressed with it ( its just gone through its mot yesterday with a clean sheet ( I tell lies they found a nail in a back tyre )

I did spend a lot time before i retired (when i was younger) lying on my back under cars with the engine in bits or balancing a gearbox on my chest trying to force it home so i am no stranger to spanners or sockets.

Unfortunatly modern cars are a lot more complex than the ones i cut my teeth on so i suspect i shall be asking you guys for a lot of help and advice,so if one of my questons seems stupid please bear with me.

Welcome to the forum.

Looks like a nice clean motor, 92K is nothing for these models, just keep an ear on the gearbox as they are made of chocolate !! I would for a first job, drain & refill the g/box with 3.2L of 75W/90 synthetic oil

Hi Nige8021

Thanks for the information,as it happends when they were doing the mot yesterday i took the opportunity to have a good look underneath her and the mechanic pointed out that there was a slight leak from the back of the gearbox where the selecter lever goes in.I intend to have the oilseal replaced so they can replace the oil while they are doing that.As a matter of interest do you know if there are any rainwater drains on this model that i should check and make sure they are clear.

Welcome along. From memory I think the drains are under the scuttle panel on each side

Hi Matt01

Thanks for that ,in the morning when its light i will check and make sure they are clear. My main reason for asking was that i noticed when i was under the car that some rainwater was dripping from one of the rubber drain bungs on the front passenger side floor.

If it has a sunroof? the front drain tubes run down the A pillars then through the bulkhead and out into the scuttle and then drains down the inner wing area, another common area for water leak is the pollen filter seals especially if the scuttle drain holes are blocked

How do bud? Will have to keep my eye out as am only up the road in Oldbury and am through Harbourne/Selly quite a bit :D
