UPDATE !

So had a spare couple of hours today so......

Sorted throttle cable. Took it off at the throttle end, massively greased and wd40'd it and now doesn't stick. Happy days!

Changed the temp sensor, was covered in what looked like red mastic when I took old one out!

476ca19471aeaa1c18aed83d2fc0eeea.jpg

Tried and failed to change thermostat, as previous owner had changed top bolt, to a bolt with nut on other end that you can't get anything on! No matter what I tried it just kept spinning, so try again 2mrw.

Also did some more degreasing, the oil I think has actually helped preserve it!!

Before :-

After :-

Changed the wiper relay but still no joy, only wipers on full speed!? New relay seems to buzz a lot, making me think it could be a dodgy relay I've been sold?

Checked out Digijet ECU to get code for a chip to be made.

Blackened up the trim/bumpers.

Fitted clear indicators

Lastly fitted up the BBS RA's (14") an drove her across to my mums (where I've got use of her driveway) so I can hopeful do suspension/ARB Blocks 2mrw :-)

I doubt you'll find a new set cheaper than PPP on here. I'd recommend you get them for 2 reasons 1. because you are lowering the car, these blocks correct the castor angle 2. the ARB will more than l

May be worth taking the thermostat housing off altogether and replacing the thermostat that way.

Dashboard in (love having a Rev counter!), though speedo is stuck and clicks annoyingly, so gonna swap that out with original one

Speakers swapped for new alpine ones. Old ones were FUBAR!! The foam surround had disappeared! Was a PITA to fit them, has to butcher the dash to get enough room, and grilles still don't quite fit after trimming, but man they sound a million times better. Just need to fit my amp and sub next

Just needs to be slammed next! And rust treated ;)

She's... Quite something...

I think you should scra- err, I mean, rust treat her first.

Lol! Yeah Deffo rust treatment next (after I've got the windscreen wipers working!) ;) she's got character

i guess the exhaust and manifold are fitted now and you are uploading a soundclip as we speak?

Good luck with fitting lowering kit and arb blocks, i hope everything goes smooth.

Is it a long walk from your mums?

Lol, should be being fitted today at my mates garage http://dlfclassiccars.com (said I'd give him a shameless plug!)

It is a long walk from my mums place, prob about 3 hours! ;) ha ha ha. I'm really going for it on this project, cause it's gonna be a daily driver, and Audi hopefully going At the weekend. Normally do things in drubs and drabs, but young family now so any time is precious ;) sound clips coming soon

Am fairly confident with suspension as have done 2 mk2 golfs before, just getting the fronts out of their housings that is the only concern (due to being different from the golf mk2 fronts) ;)

I'm still loving the comments regarding the rust. Actually makes me laugh.

Really liking the progress on this, it's worth stockpiling parts :)

...have you noticed it's rusty? ;)

Yeah, what's the problem with it?!

I would like to point out that my comment was entirely sarcastic!

I think it'll be good when it's finished. it's a project I'm enjoying watching unfold!

...have you noticed it's rusty? ;)

you know rust is lighter than carbon right?

so it is all part of a bigger plan to let the polo shed some weight.

it'll make the polo faster.

how is progress coming?

Haha, 'Pikey level weight reduction'... rust it all away!

I think the reality of owning VW's is we're all going to have rust!

  • Author

Lol! So in theory my power to weight ratio is just going to get better and better if rust is lighter than carbon fibre! ;)

Another 5 years on and she'll be faster than a veyron! ;)

Just had call from my mate Dom at DLF, exhaust & manifold all fitted along with ARB blocks, lamda probe wiring extended as on the other side of manifold, and even diagnosed my wiper motor as the issue to boot! Wow! All for £160! (Well a Bit more as gotta pay on credit card so VAT on top cause I'm skint) Not bad considering the time it would have taken me (with a trolley jack on the driveway!).

Purchased new (old) wiper motor for £18 delivered. Happy days

Would've been a great opportunity to dewiper!

edit: Did he do the tracking as well or are you waiting for it to be lowered?

Bugger! Oh well, next time I'll ask first ;)

Ain't done tracking as lowering on sat/Sunday hopefully :-)

So did a little BHP/ton calculation. If the stainless manifold/de cat makes the 64 BHP suggested by vw, then this should be the result (and if I've got the figures correct!) :-)

Love hate relationship with Peggy began today. Now feel like torching the f#ck#ng thing!!!

Swapped out speedo into new dash, as old one was stuck and clicking really annoyingly!

Collected from mates garage. Shiny new 4 branch and Jetex fitted (though annoying slight rattle on subframe so will have to look at that.
