To be fair it's better to buy a car that's rusty and raw. Rather than one that's shiny but full of filler and botched repairs. See a lot of that on cars that are 'light resto' and turn out to be full of hidden rust.

Apart from the wings the rust doesn't look to bad any way it's just because it stands out more on a white car.

cheers buddy, yeah i agree. this one is deffo 'original' and raw, but has been looked after (apart from rust!). got bills for over £1K in the last 2 years alone for new dissy, fuel tank, battery, tyres, etc etc.

kinda nice that it was original base car to start from scratch from too, as a lot have already done the rounds on the 'vw scene'.

So weather was a bit crappy, but managed to do the thermostat housing, temp sensors and a bit of degreasing.

And how the exhaust currently sits...low! And rattles like hell. But if I hold it up its a lot better. Think I'm gonna replace donut style hangers with other style

Hey mate tempory way to raise the exhaust get 3 jubilee clips join them together to make a long "band", and push it under were the donughts hook on the exhaust and above the rubber holder peg things, is that a standard back box? I have a glass pack back box in mine, with 1 rubber holding it on, it's a modern rubber of a ford does the trick

U got any pictures mate. Trying to think how that would work? Might try using zip ties round the centre of the rubber donuts to shorten them

Get some steel reinforced cable ties to raise the box, or extra large jubilee clips!

Well took the plunge. Figured I'm never gonna have the money for the wings, so bought them anyway!! Ooops!! Wife ain't gonna be happy!!

Oh and a dissy cap, and rotor arm and 4xexhaust rubbers ( not the simple round ones this time, so should fit a bit more snug)

Didn't think that lot was a bad price, with free delivery too. Will let us know what the pattern wings are like when I get them

I'm really impressed! Unwrapped one wing, expecting it to be really thin and badly pressed, but actually looks really good quality. And galvanised. Guess the proof is in the fitting

That's always my logic! 'I'm never going to have the money any way but will end up buying them eventually so may as well buy them now' That's probably why I'm broke and counting down the days for my next student finance payment

That's a cheap price for an nz/gt thermostat, I've done cable ties around the doughnuts before and it worked quite well for a good 6 months until I scraped bad haha, normal cable ties around the doughnuts should be fine 👍 but when that fails large jubilee clip, and sorry I don't have any pics.

Yeah thermostat housing seems good quality too, ran it up to temp and doesn't seem to leak, came with new rubber head seal too :-)

Hoping these new exhaust mounts r a bit shorter than the current round ones I have so should raise it a bit, failing that cable ties or jubilee clips will come into play

I Second the idea with the jubilee clips, currently got a rather large one sleeved with hosepipe going through the back box exhaust mount hanger holding on my exhaust,

bodged up cherry bomb job, does the job until it breaks.

Been going strong since November so seems to be pretty substantial.

All the best with the other hangers though!

Right its fake friday, so time for a list for the 4 day weekend!

1- raise rear suspension to top notch (30mm instead of 60mm!)
2- fit thermo housing and blue temp sensor
3- fit gear shifter repair kit (so I don't keep selecting 1st instead of reverse!)
4- wire up invertor for backlit dials (speedo and Heater dials)
5- sort out exhaust banging (new hangers)
6- rust treatment!!!! (wirebrush on drill, Kurust, primer, paint and Laquer)
7- swap rear seat covers over (original CL rear seat has a non scratched back paint, new GT one is not as good)
8- wire up sub & amp (need BASS for my toooons!)
9- sort out flat spot at low revs, idle & CO2 screws and poss advance ignition now I've got 4branch. (Had a quick go at this but needs mor work)
10-tracking! (at least roughly now she's lowered. till i get her back on the road and get it done properly)
11- lube up mirror adjusters (currently hardly work from inside car)
12- tweak front speaker covers (dont quite fit the new alpines)
13- more degreasing in engine bay (spray degreser and poss pressure washer!)
14- paint rocker cover (well rusty at the mo, but may need new gasket at same time)

15 - Remove old wings

16 - Paint new wings (never done this before so hope it goes ok!)

17 - check speedo reading with iphone speedo app (as i think i may have cocked up the calibration when removing the needles)

And a test drive up my mums estate and back (as SORN at the mo)

only prob is i've already got a well busy weekend, so wil prob not get any of this done!

Just for good measure, figured it's worth doing the plugs and air filter before trying to tune her up, as I've already got rotor arm and dizzy cap to fit 2mrw, hopefully that'll sort out the flat spot at low revs :-)

I think the best way to make the car presentable would be to sort out the rust, paint over the bits you sorted out with some primer, stick the black wings on, mask the thing up, and spray the whole car in plastidip by hand using one of those kits.

Yeah tackling the rust next don't really wanna go down plastidip route, I've already got all the primer/base coat and lacquer cans, so gonna give that a go first

So after being ill all weekend, I finally dragged myself outta bed and did some more stuff.

New dizzy cap, rotor arm, exhaust rubbers and suspension. Shame I've lost my spark plug socket or I would've done those too!
