I have a couple of issues on my 6kv5 <late type with 6n2 interior>

Firstly,.. My front Anti-roll Bar is corroded,.. and whilst not completely buggered, it needs replacing, has anyone tried getting one before? I have tried so many suppliers, think it may be a dealer only part but thought I'd ask on here before i go down to VW.

Secondly, I have play on my steering,.. I have checked over the whole of the front of the car and narrowed it down to what i think may be a worn UJ on the steering column just behind the steering wheel causing about 1/2" of play,.. that or the splines aren't too healthy. as anyone seen an exploded part diagram of this system?…. and do you think it will be dealer only again?

If they are the same as the 6n/2 I have a few here. You say it's corroded, how badly are we talking here? It's common for them to corrode a little around where they mount, but usually a quick wire brush over it clean it off.

The UK generally shouldn't wear out, not for that age anyway. Have you tried tightening the 13mm bolt? Maybe the threads have gone on that bolt, if so just use a good quality nut and bolt through it and tighten it down really well. This happened to me when I change my rack, but I just forgot to tighten it properly.

Have you checked for play at the wheels? Could either be worn track rod or tie rod really. Only other things are the lower ball joint, or the rubber bushings/ top mounts.

had it up on the ramps and checked it all over,… bushes are fine,.. track rod ends etc, bearings,.. it's all solid, the play definitely feels and sounds like it's right behind the wheel,… I should remove it and investigate.

The ARB is absolutely due for renewal,.. looks like moisture has got under the paint and eaten inwards,,… a wire brush will probably not suffice,.. I'll get some photos for you guys to have a look at. I have no idea if it's the same as the 6n2 ,…. it would certainly be the same as a polo 6K 'classic' as it's the same front. having been through the FEBI, bosch, and lemforder book at work,.. i think it'll be dealer only.

Does it use a link bar like a mk4 golf or a loop eye over the bar and a rubber ring either side?

If the latter, I'd say it's likely it's the same as 6n but as most of the front end is more like the golf, I'm fairly certain it will be a golf item. It's a strange car, because it has polo on the badge, but not really anywhere else.

Have you looked for Córdoba or Ibiza ones, effectively the same car as Córdoba

Sorry for the late replies i appreciate you guys chiming in with suggestions etc, as christmas arrived i just got so busy that i had to just drive the car and put up with the niggles!

anyway - I will get some photos of the ARB for you lot to see. I'm certain it needs replacing but maybe my memory has exaggerated the corrosion on it.

Dixy - could you elaborate on this 13mm bolt on the steering column? I'm unsure where it is, will it be at the bottom of the column inside the car? I'm guessing this is a pinch bolt you're referring to.

Yes it's the pinch bolt I was talking about.

One side I think has a squared head that is held in the clamps body and a 13mm nut on the end of the bolt. When I messed about changing my steering rack a while ago I had massive play because I hadn't tightened the bolt properly.

You need to wobble the steering wheel while you tighten it to sort of centre it otherwise it will feel tight until you get the wheels on the ground and turn the wheel with a bit of resistance behind it as it will jump and become a bit loose (a VERY tiny amount- literally less then a quarter turn) and will make a huge amount of play at the wheel.

Might be a good idea to take the nut off and put some red thread lock on the threads.
