VW Polo for my son

Featured Replies

Hi All

Shay from Essex, just sold VW Splitscreen !! and ride a honda sh300 for my daily commute.

Just joined and have a 17 year old who is itching t get a car, having been burnt before with vauxhalls and french motors are a no go for me, I have talked him into a a VW polo 1.2 as i have a softspot for VW's

Would you be able to give me some helpful advice on what i should look out for when viewing a Polo, I have a budget of approx 2K and would prefer the 1.2 petrol as the insurance is cheaper for them.

Thanks in advance

Shay

Depends what your after really, 6n's rust a fair bit so I would personally go for 6n2 onwards as they are galvanised so "shouldn't" rust.

Dont really know much on that particular engine though so can't help there

My 6n2 was rustier than my 6n

But for 2k you should pick up a pretty mint 9n

I don't think 9n3s are in that price range at the moment and if they are they're either a CAT D/C repaired or tatty.

My friend's had a 1.2 9n for 2 years and only trouble he's had is an engine light come on, due to an o2 sensor IIRC.

Hi

Thanks for your input, I do like that one on Ebay for £2k

If your set on the 1.2 they have a known problem with eating valves causing misfires, so make sure there are no fault lights ON and if possible get the codes read and if there are any relating to misfires get a compression & leak down test done before parting with any cash :)

Thank you, any idea what causes the problem of eating valves, also what should i do to help prevent this. Regular oil changes i assume, what oild do you guys recommend.

Thanks

It seems to be a bit random with the valve problem, some engines go for years without fault others fail normally just out of the warranty period.

10/40 Synthetic (VW 504 00 spec) is probably the best oil.

thanks

I'd get a 1.0 or 1.3 mk2f if it was me they don't rust like a 6n they have bullet proof engines and easy/cheap to fix if they do go Wrong and can be cheap insurance :)

Hi All, going to look at a 2006 1.2 s 55, anything i should look at , it has done 61000 miles, looks nice and has alloys, in silver. Going for £2500, looking around i think that is top price if all is good,
