Hi all,

I've had a ABS light on for a while now... did the diagnostic check and it reported back front left ABS sensor... Code: 00283

This morning I decided to brave the cold and have a look. Turns out the ABS wire has snapped!

Anyway, is it a easy fix? The reason I ask is because looking at the wires behind the battery they all seem to merge into one big wiring loom. Or is it a hidden standard clip connector?

I know I should find this out myself and I did a quick search I couldn't find anything...

I assume it'll be a case of removing the battery, chasing the connector unclip old, re-clip new... bish bash bosh done?

I would say all the cables from each wheel sensor go into the big plug connection on the ABS pump itself.

If you can see both ends of the cable can you strip the wires back and use crimp connectors to join them back together? Or solder and heat shrink depending on what you prefer. Should only be 2 wires that need to be joined.

Very unusual. What does the end going to the sensor look like?

Have you had any recent work at a "garage"?

Yes it is a one piece wire until the connector right at the wheel hub. Personally I would just solder them back together and seal it as besti could, ie smal heat shrink over each wire then a thicker one over the outer body. From what I can see its Brocken on the inside of the engine bay? If so then as above is fine, if it is inside the arch then some sort of sealant migh be a good idea over the ends of the heat shrink.

You will need to take the battery out and remove some of the plastic trunking to get the other end of the wiring free, then solder it in the bay and when finished push it through and reconnect. Save you messing around in the wheel well.

Hi guys. Sorted it now. Had to take battery / washer bottle out. And splice the wireing loom a bit to get better access to the snapped wire. Spliced both end and got some bullet connectors with heat wrap. Wired them all up and put a chunk of electrical tape all over.

Started the car. Ran my scanning tool. Cleard the faults and all seem fine so far....

I just assumed it was a clip connector within the engine bay / loom. But i gave up trying to locate it.

I have an intermittent problem with the ABS sensor on the nsf too. My garage changed the sensor and cleared the fault but the light stayed off for a few miles then came back on...I suspect wiring .

Were the wires easy to trace ?

It can be a bit tricky getting to the top end of the cable. Normally, if they're going to get damaged, it'll be nearer to the wheel end. Unplug it from that end and give it a good inspection for any cuts in the rubber coating (give it a good flex in each direction, as the coating can hide damage). 

 

Do you know what the fault code was? Either a number of something like "open circuit", "implausible reading", "short to ground", etc. 

 

Sensors can go faulty fairly soon after being fitted, it might be worth asking the garage, nicely, if they could give it another scan if you haven't got your own reader.
