I have just put another engine in a 1.0 6n2 after it sat off the road for 2 years and I have a teething problem.

When I start it I get a grinding noise for a split second and I am not sure what it is. My Alfa made a similar noise at start up and that was the variator but the AUC engine doesn't have a variable camshaft but that was the same type of noise.

100% starter motor. Mine was the same just put a new one on

That would make sense because the starter hasn't turned in 2 years so I bet it has started to stick. I will have a look at the weekend and post an update.

a hammer tap is usually all is required to bring it up to speed

When mine done it i did try to open it up but isnt one you can take apart. I did put some grease on shaft which quitened it down abit

You can split them but little point.

As above a little tap should free it, but it sounds like the bushing is worn. Very cheap to get a new one on eBay.

I haven't ever fitted one on the car so can't help with that. I can say that if it is worn it will very cricklewood eat through any new starters spindle, making it scrap.
