Steering recently has felt off and as if it will suddenly go off in it own direction, goes in an out of feeling out of control. I first noticed sudden bouts of steering wheel wobble ( wheels balance twice and tracking done) it would come on randomly and then suddenly go. I also have a knocking sound when i move the wheel left about half a turn and then back to center, sound comes from the steering rake area. I also have to turn the wheel allot to make turns?

I have heard you can adjust the steering rake play? can anyone help with any off these?

If your mk2 has the early two piece steering column take off the drivers side tray and follow the column down to an aluminium casting that connects to the steering rack input shaft. This casting has two rubber bushings that fall apart over time giving the symptoms you describe. Don't drive it in this state, it could do you some serious damage.

My Mk2 is an 1989 model bread van? Will it have a 2 piece steering column? thanks alot, will it be okay until the weekend? short journeys? thanks alot :)

It won't have the bushes no.

But think about what you are asking - is it OK to drive with unpredictable steering? How are we to know? Vic has warned you it may not be a good idea.

would be worth looking at the arb mounts , could be lose or worn out

doesnt sound safe at all , better to take the bus until its fixed than kill yourself

Very good advice, short journeys are short journeys. It only takes a second to flip a car and it is WAY easier to do then you would think.

This sort of advice is given from people that have no doubt been in your situation and learned from there mistakes. There are no doubt a lot more people that aren't around anymore that would give this sort of advice if they could :).

Tbh, I would prepare to replace all the steering components, as with the brakes these 2 are probably the most important parts of the car and can literally save your life, so you do the math, is say a couple hundred £ (wouldn't cost that much, but figuratively speaking) worth your life, or even worse someone else's?

I had a track rod go once with no warning and it left me with no steering and immediately put me in the hedge. I was on my way to the motorway so could have been a lot worse. This was less than a quarter of a mile from home too, so you might say a short journey
