Just got stung for a £40 fine plus an extra £18.36 in duty costs for forgetting that my Black Racer's Sorn ran out three weeks ago. The fact that its been pinned to my notice board for the past two months and I still forgot about it, kinda made me go DOH!

A SORN runs out? I have no experience of tax issues myself but that sounds stupid, surely if you've declared it off road it just turns into a lump of metal sitting on your drive? I would have thought SORNing is opting out indefinitely until you re-tax it or it gets seen on a public road...

Kinda my fault that he forgot it, he said he had to go to the post office and sort it, i said nah it be ok were do it later.

LOl expect we got to busy with the cars and forgot about it, and then left it my mk2 for a while, and then we relised we forgot it.

no its not that simple.....

years ago cars wern't sorn'd, you just didnt tax them (or use them), but then they brought in the SORN regs so that they could trace the history of cars, as before they could be bought and sold without the DVLA knowing where they were.

the SORN declaration last only a year and then needs renewing, (and I've had one car sorned since the regs came into effect).

the sorn regulations mean that a car cant disappear from records and reappear later, and help cut down on criminal activities such as ringing

yeah you just get a normal road fund liscence reminder when the 12 months is up when the Sorn declaration runs out.

you can keep the car where you like as long as its not on the public road (not sure about public places like car parks though). a few years ago you also had to declare where the car was being kept (dont think thats necessary now though)
