hi,

Can someone please point me to the right direction, my car temperature gauge never goes up at all and also the car heating never gets warm.

Any ideas what it could be and I keep freezing in the car.

Sounds to me like the thermostat is stuck wide open.

If you let the car idle away stationary for a while does it eventually start to heat up?

It is a hit and miss sometimes eventually but mostly never. Where is this located? Just to clarify this is not the same as coolant thermostat is it which you replace where are the coolant is draining away? I did replace this 3 months ago when I had engine cutting out. Bough from vw dealer.

It is the coolant thermostat I'm on about.

Did you check the thermostat housing for damage? They are known to crack and cause cooling issues.

Will give it a check and update.

Sorry one quick question is the coolant temperature sensor and this thermostat we talking about the same thing?

I replaced the sensor and not thermostat. If different where is it located, I can remove and reseat it to see if it helps, if not I shall replace it.

The thermostat regulates the engine temperature by opening and closing to the flow of coolant around the engine.

The temperature sensor measures the coolant temperature and the fuelling of the engine is then adjusted accordingly - more fuel when the engine is cold, less when it is hot.

When the thermostat is permanently open (or has been completely removed, as some have) the car tends to use far more fuel than it really should do.

If the housing is damaged internally, the thermostat is then unable to open, causing the temperature to go way too high - that is the reason that some people leave the 'stat out altogether, to the detriment of performance and economy (as well as your comfort, due to lack of heating)

If you follow the 'top' radiator hose from the radiator, it connects into a black plastic housing, this is the thermostat housing. Don't be too surprised if it is empty when you take it off, if it is, as I have said above, it is probably damaged.

If you need a new thermostat, I recommend that you buy a genuine VW one - and don't forget to buy some G13 coolant for it.

Thanks for the detailed explaination.

So I followed top hose took it out, some coolant lost, now should the thermostat be there or do I need to unscrew the housing to get to it as when I removed the hose there was nothing in there.

Did you just take the hose off the housing?

The housing is made up of 2 parts held together with 2 bolts. You'll need to remove these and the thermostat should be in there.

Ahh ok was confused as in previous post it said follow the top hose but it's the bottom one.

Thanks just checked thermostat in there and looked ok to me when I pushed it etc not stuck or anything.

The symptoms are when idle car seems to warm up and temperature gauge show its started going up. After driving a while it drops down.

I am thinking of changing just the thermostat as housing looked fine to me, if issue still there I might change the housing too.

Where does the 0 ring go? I think I might have dropped it in dark maybe need to get that too

Sorry that I didn't make it clear about the two bolts.

If the thermostat is open at room temperature, you need to replace it - It should only open if you immerse it in near boiling water.

The normal running temperature is about 90°C

thanks all replacing thermostat seems to have solved the issue.

As I was not sure if the issue was the thermostat, I purchased one from eurocarparts rather than VW. Are this OK or shall I replace with a VW one?

how much does it cost at VW?

If it's working, leave it alone. If it stops working, replace with one from VW...

Hi guys

Need help again unfortunately I have the same issue again. Car temperature gauge does not move at all.

Is there something else I should check for or get proper thermostat from vw direct and swap with the eurocarparts one I got?

Car been running for an hr and no change at all. This is the same issue I had at first until I swapped the thermostat few days ago.

Help!!!! As its my wife's car and she keeps complaining of heating in car.

Just further info the hose from radiators both of them equally warm, luke warm strange.

Right again it was thermostat stuck open.

Now bought original from vw hopefully this will finally solve the issue.

Anyone having this issue best to buy original part.
