Hi,

My polo 1.0 loses power and sometimes the EPC light comes on, I will be going on 40 miles an hour when it will lose power and I have restart the car. At times the car will just stall.

I am getting three error codes as below:

P0322- Ignition distributor Engine speed input circuit no charge

P0321- Ignition distributor engine speed input circuit range/performance

P0351- Ignition coil a primary/secondary circuit malfunction

Any help appreciated.

I would start with checking the Camshaft position sensor, remove it, clean the connector & check the tip of the sensor for damage

Can't find anything online for my car.

Take the airfilter box off, at the end of the camshaft cover by the coil pack towards the rear, you'll see a 3 pin connector and a single bolt ( 10Nm) holding the sensor in place.

hi guys

haven't really had a chance to look into this until my wife called me that the car would not start after it stalled in the middle of the road. waited for 5 minutes and started to work fine.

Codes again as above after I had just cleared it. Now reading on the forums am getting confused, some saying it could with be a cam sensor or crank sensor, if its crank then for a diy like me I will not be able to replace and will have to fork out for a garage to sort out.

Any ideas on how I can confirm whether a cam or crank sensor?

P0321 refers P0321 does refer to the crank sensor, it is a DIY replaceable item, it's easier to get at with the starter motor & inlet manifold removed, held in with a single bolt (5Nm)

How easy is it to remove the stater motor and inlet manifold?

Also is it wise to get the crack sensor from vw or would one from eurocarparts be ok?

The inlet manifold is 8 6mm hex bolts, and is best removed first as you might find you can get at the sensor with just this removed but if not it will give better access to the 3 bolts for the starter motor.

I would only get the sensor from VW/TPS

in order to remove the starter motor do I need put the car on some sort of a stand and go underneath to unscrew it?

I will be giving a go on this in the evening to see if I can get to the crank sensor, if yes I will buy a new one from vw.

With the inlet manifold off, you can remove the starter from above, but you might not need to remove the starter to get at the sensor

is this part also called impulse sensor?

just rang vw to check on the cost and I was getting confused what it was, I said it was speed sensor crankshaft sensor. Is this the one with cable if am correct?

Might be best I remove it and then take it to them to get the correct one.

The letter changes for different chassis numbers, but if you get them to search on the basic number without the letter it should give the correct spec, it's showing up as 52 €uros in Germany, so double that in £'s by the time the stealership has put their markup on the price :(

yep its 84 + vat so expensive.

Hoping I can fix it myself or else will have to pay some more to the garage.

Just wondering I have not had this issue since that day. Is it possible the issue could be something else or resolved?

Do this errors come and go or if the crank sensor was faulty I would have thought it would cause issues all the time

Just looking at Haynes manual and am surprised I don't see any mention of crankshaft sensors.

What engine code do you have ?? as it's mentioned in the dealers workshop manuals

Hi it's a 6N2 2001 model 5 door hatchback.

I will need to check log book to confirm but I believe the 6N1 type were before 2000 model

Yes it will be a 6N2 but it's the engine code I was asking about, on the logbook the engine serial number should have 3 letters at the start this is the engine code

The AUC definitely has a crankshaft sensor, It could be just a poor connector on the sensor so it comes & goes

Was hoping Haynes guide would have something. I like following a manual or something so I know what I am looking at. Shame youtube don't have anything on crankshaft for this car.

I use ross-tech can normal point you in the right direction but it's already been covered that's it your speed sensors is to blame.

Haynes mentions location of engine speed sensor I believe this to be the crank position sensor according to links above saying it being the reference to that too.

So I removed the air filter cover and also located the one end of the cable. As soon as I remove it start car I have the same issue with the same codes, so I am sure that is the one.

I followed where it went and it's going somewhere where I can't even get my hands in to confirm that is the one. It is right underneath the starter going through a gap.

I don't feel confident removing the manifold as I think it's way difficult for me and would struggle putting back together.

So would this be easier if done underneath the car, I could try to get the axis or a way to have the car lifted and try. Worse off I might get it done in a garage although I love doing stuff like this and would be very happy if I did it myself
