Hi Guys, just need some advice on finding the problem for the passenger rear. its either the the axle is bent slightly or the rear shcok asorber. i have a picture of the passenger side which looks at a angle slightly (the damaged side), i also have a picture of the drivers side rear to compare it with. so any opinions would be idle guys.

Are the rear tyres wearing normally? as that would indicate if the axle was bent or out of alignment, Does the passenger side shock feel normal (bounce/rebound?) as a bent shock would tend to bind

I wonder if the centre bush has worn out in the gas damper? I guess replace both sides (including top mounts) and get some 4 wheel alignment done!

How long have you owned this car?

Have you checked the top mount of the shock that isn't straight? Have you checked it is secured correctly from the top? As on extension if it hasn't been bolted down correctly this could have caused the chassis to move away from the shock and the shock/top mount assembly unseat itself.

Start off with the simple solutions and work your way from there.

first I've had the car for a year done loads of work as I'm a mechanic in training. I haven't checked fully of the rear shock only visual inspection so far. I'll upload a picture of how my rear passengers wheel is sitting to my drivers side, the camber is positive and defo not sitting correctly.

I'll fully inspect the shock tomorrow and keep people updated.

1st and 2nd pic suggests to me that the lower shock bush has collapsed

that's what I was thinking, the 1st and 2nd picture is my passenger side and the 3rd is my drivers side which nothing is wrong with the drivers side just a reference to compare with.

Well seeing as you have owned the car for that period of time I would move away from the bent axle thesis as if that were the case then surely you would have remembered hitting something to cause that kind of damage! Certainly not easy to bend the axle.

I would check top mount and as indicated by the gent above, the lower shock bushing. I poped out to have a look at mine and there is no flex in mine what so ever. Judging by the third picture as well it looks as though your offside lower bush may have excess flex also. Maybe worth getting them both changed.

It's a tricky one, it's hard to tell from those pictures, but to me it looks like the wheel is not straight in pic 1&2 compared to pic 3, and it's bent in the same direction as the angle of the shock.

From the pics I would say the beam is bent, but as I say it's hard to tell. If the bushing was collapsed there isn't a reason for the shock to sit at that angle, it would just bottom out on the bolt I would have thought?

As for wheel alignment there is much point in doing that for the rear as there isn't any adjustment (non that I can see?), but it would alter the front adjustment because they use the rear as reference usually.

Shocks wise they look like they have had a fun life, so changing them wouldn't be a bad thing and they are cheap, I got mine off ebay for £12 the pair. Have a look on there before getting them from ECP etc. Top mounts are a must, and make sure you get both parts as I was sold only the smaller top part and now have to buy a complete set.

Not trying to make a sale here but I do have a straight gti rear beam with new bushes you can have for the price of the bushes if you do need it.

finally took my rear shock off, it looks like the bush has defo been damaged and need replacing, the rear axle looks ok but will upload pics of the shock and the axle guys.

I'm not 100% sure really. The rear beam I got had big bushes in them, I changed them for new and when it came to swapping it I found the old beam had small ones.

I'm no sure if all the grid had them, so I guess if you can measure the width of the bushes in there would give us an idea.

Is yours a gti?

Also, that shock is bent, I've never seen a rear one bent like that. I would bet at least the mount part on the beam is also bent, may just be slightly but still bent.

Edit- am I seeing things, or is the shock in the right picture bent to the left slightly? Just looked again and I can't tell.

New ones are £30 each for a pristine Sach damper from ECP. I would renew the top mounts too!

Have a look in ebay I got a pair for £15 delivered, but then you have to wait for delivery if you go to ECP or GSF. Etc then you'll have them straight away so is worth the extra money if your pushed for time.
