Dottys Silver Coupe

Featured Replies

Hi, my names Keiren, friends call me KC but on the forums I roam as K Dotty. I'm another "been on the forums for ages but don't post much" guy but I mainly do a lot of reading on here.

Soooo onto my car.

L reg 1 litre coupe. When I received the car in 2012 it looked like this

2egd35t.jpg15hijoo.jpgWell it kinda sat like this in my dads lockup until i passed my test last month. Took long due to life, college, money and stuffs. I got it back on the 16th and it need a bit of work to pass its MOT. It had been sat for nearly 30 months so a few bits needed changing.

Wheels were unbalanced and wobbly, new horn, new wipers, rear brakes where seized, mid exhaust and tailpipe had rusted through....All minor things really

My dad owns VW Enterprise so he sorted it and it flew thrkugh with no advisories.

This is my first car and i have no mechanical experience but have done alot reading and download the Haynes maunal so its time to get my hands dirty.

Soooo. .... The current spec,

15" BBS RAs have to check the tires for size but i know the rears rub a bit

Was lowered before i had it but has stock shocks, 40/40 I'm guessing

Exhaust tip from a mk1 golf backbox, cut a slight recess in the bumner so it could fit but also be raised

De-badged grill

Gt-clocks

Late spec rear lights

Gt Cam (not fitted yet)

Mountney Steering wheel (again it came on the car)

2j5m2hj.jpg

82861143e9ad73aa6cb9cb62b543ffdd8367ee0a

This is how it sits atm. Future plans are to;

Give it a good clean

Needs new battery + smaller rear tyres

Roll archs

Get a rear wiper arm

New shocks and springs

Finish refurbing my bbs RMs

Clear indicators

Front splitter (maybe)

Fit GT cam but might throw an ADB in first

Flocked dash+suede wheel

Stainless exhaust

Buy new speakers+amp

New seats

Maybe CC bumpers but nearly all silver polos have them so undecided

Don't wanna invest too much money, looking at that list I'm not sure how that's gonna be possible but this is a daily so can't really have it of the road for too long. Also I don't have a camera as of yet so phone pics ftw.

I'll add more pics later once I get home but yeah that's all I got to now.

Looking good mate :-)

Very nice silver works well on the polo, I would leave the springs changing last or leave a week off with out the car to change, my castle nuts where a pain I cut them off in the end.

Yeah shocks and springs will be changed after the tyres but with my dad on my side hopefully it won't be off the road for the whole week.

My dad might have to tool for the castle nuts lying around but I'll have to ask him.

Fronts suspension isn't too bad, its the back that's stupid spongy and a large tyres causing the rubbing and driving me insane

Well i still dont have a decent camera but i guess phone pics are better than no pics.

Progress has been slow due to me losing my job but te show must go on.

The cold weather and me living in a tower block has really stopped me from doing much since i cant run anything off the mains and stretch the wire to my car e.g.a vacuum.

PICS....

2015_02_24_15_25_16.jpgThe car is pretty clean but as with every 21 year old car there is a few imperfections;

few storage marks on the roof

tiny dent in the drivers wing

small bits of top coat faded on bonnet

tiny amount of surface rust? above where the wiper should be

Rear arch lips are a bit bent out due to rubbing

Trims need blackening

Plates need replacing.....

That list is me nit picking since there isnt really much wrong with it lol

Not sure how to tak an interior shot but

Since the carpets were messy, i had loads of time to spare today i thought id clean out the inside. Did get the car washed a few days ago but its dirty again because England.

2015_02_24_15_28_14.jpg

Anybody know what these are for?

2015_02_24_15_28_42.jpg

Decided to clean under the seat too since i found loads of glass when the amp was being wired up.........i was too lazy to clean it but needed doing

before the glass cuts into one of my wires

2015_02_24_15_42_03.jpg

2015_02_24_15_42_08.jpg

Had to use a dustpan & brush which was a nightmare in itself along

with the fact i'm over 6 foot tall but i got it done in the end

2015_02_24_16_00_29.jpg

(I know i need to trim the wiring down but the boot setup is temporary and will be getting changed soon)

Also changed the passenger wing mirror since the old one fell off. Found a pair of mirrors in the car when it was getting MOT'd so just used them.

Got too cold so i only did one.

2015_02_24_15_35_43.jpg

Gave the inside a quick sweep and wiped down the dash, not perfect but alot cleaner then before

2015_02_24_16_59_30.jpg

A quick pic of all the crap that i cleaned out, old owner musta had kids because the rear ashtray was caked in chewing gum :unknw:

Lastly onto the sounds, consists of;

Alpine CDA-9855r Headunit (needs replacing, glide touch crap is doing my nut in and ipod is distorted by the radio still playing quietly somehow )

Alpine KCA-K420i iPod Adapter

Alpine SXE-1750S 2-Way Components

Alpine SXE-4625S 4x6 (better alternative to cutting parcel shelf since theres already a space for them)

JL Audio 15w0v3-4 500W Sub

Some infinity amp, cousin gave it to me. Only 300W but thats 300 more than i had before

Didnt take a closup of the headunit but you get the idea

2015_02_24_15_27_24.jpg

Tweets sitting in old speaker corpses magneticly

2015_02_24_15_30_40.jpg

6.5"s in centre console on either side since i coulndnt wait to make some door pods

The do produce some nice mid-bass so I'm happy

haven't kicked a hole in any of them yet but have ordered som grills to prevent that

2015_02_24_15_28_14.jpg

Not sure why more people dont do this rather than cutting up parcel shelfs.

Do produce a decent amount of mid-bass even though they're not in an enclosure and the highs are crisp

2015_02_24_15_34_38.jpg

2015_02_24_15_35_27.jpg

The bass maker. The sub came with the box so i threw it in but it doesnt sound great.

My dads making up a new ported box to hit the notes i want and i'm waiting to buy a new amp and eq from a friends car but its in storage so the wait continues

2015_02_24_15_34_17.jpg

The little boot space i have is occupied by my gt cam and wing mirrors but i haven't fit them due to the weather

Amp is bolted to the back of the rear bench. Does get a bit warm because its throwing everything its got at the sub

which isnt enought but it will do for now, poor thing

2015_02_24_16_01_47.jpg

Its far from a show car build but compared to standard its a massive improvement and i was happy with it but I'm an audiophile so everything will be getting upgraded during the year

Next plans for the car are;

Remove the side trims and freshen up bumpers

New plates

Clean engine & bay + golf elbow

New headunit

New tires all round

Lows

Will hopefully be updating this soon. Got a 1.4 now, teledials and slight lows. Little streak of bad luck and slow post has halted progress.

Clutch cable snapped far from home, drove home in second gear to then get a puncture.

Funny thing is before this I knew I needed a tires and a clutch cable which are already on order but still waiting for the tyres.

Specs are roughly the same as above but now got;

1.4 ABD

Gt Cam

Golf induction pipe + ITG Filter

60/40 kit

Porsche Teledials staggered. 165-50 fronts, unsure of rears since they're wider

25mm adapters all round

Alpine IDA x100

Will take some pics once I get the new tires on

So after my laptop breaking and a spot of bad luck with the car i'm back.

Last pic of the car before the engine conversion and new shoes.

IMG_20150724_210217.jpg

So heres my engine bay, doesnt win any awards for presentation but it works.

Its pretty messy here after my fan switch went and the car over heated but its genuinly the only picture I've taken  Will tidy up the bay soon after i buy a 4-1 mani and new bottles.

IMG_20151127_211204.jpg

Standard ABD with GT Cam and ITG filter from my dads mk1.

The induction noise is crazy and its won a few races so does put smiles on my face.

However it has left me craving more power.

My clutch cable from gsf snapped and the rubber near the end of the cable had persished (2nd one now in 3 months) so tried a one from ECP.

Been on for 3k miles so far and no issues.

GSF Left - Euro Right. Euro cable is thicker, smoother and the plastic at the end of the cable feels like a better quality so i'm happy.

Not sure about whats going on with the pic rotation but meh! Will have to upload them to somewhere else later.

I dont actually have any side shots of the car besides when i was getting the tyres fitted But i shall get one today.

Dont like the look of these tyres as it looks like they have rim protectors but i wanted them to be stretched.

IMG_20151119_113630.jpg

IMG_20151119_130847.jpg

Have a couple more pics to upload but will take some more in & out shots of the car when i get a chance.

Will slowly be updating this with pics of little bits and bobs iv fixed/changed, just short on time right now.

Thanks for reading

Looking good, don't think I've seen this thread before, the heat shield is much better than the normal polo one, is it from the ABD?

Do you have any idea of the power and had a rolling road before?

  • Author

Yeah its the and heat shield. No idea of power, car was nippy before I broke the gearbox but no it can be sluggish in the low revs.

I will be getting the gearbox rebuilt soon after xmas.

Never had a rolling road but its still only an spi setup so the figure could be in the 60s due to the can and intake.

Gonna order an exhaust and Mani, maybe get it chipped n then save up for an emerald and turbo parts

Are those 6x4 speakers you've fitted to the rear speaker grilles?

Are those 6x4 speakers you've fitted to the rear speaker grilles?

Yes they are, will be hopefully turning the parcel shelf supports I to an enclosure at some point too

How it sits, very dirty but refuse to wash it till the weather gets better.IMG_20151220_144100.jpg

Needs a wash badly but I'd washed it 2 days before I took the pic and look at the state if it. Wheels need a refurb but can't decide on a color and I'm on the hunt for some 20mm Porsche adapters.

This came Xmas eve, arrived surprising quick as I ordered it in the 23rd.

Fobs feel like genuine VW, nice weight and feel so I'm happy. Just need to wire it up.

Even came with VW logos for the remotes so well happy

IMG_20151224_114317.jpg

Will be going to my dads garage and installing this on moneday hopefully.

Got some pressed plates too but gonna wait until I restore the bumpers and led L Plate bulbs before I fit them

Alarm key looks quality! Car looks much better on the teledials, and i've also gone for quality 4x6's this time over 6x9's in a butchered shelf.. No sub for me though, need the boot to throw the nipper's bike in..

Steering wheel looks great for motorways - what's it like around town?

Kit looks top notch, I wonder if fitting it would take away some of the charm for me on mine though lol...I like to think my car is a classic even though it's not [emoji14]

Ended up selling the alarm kit because iv aquired a Clifford alarm with central locking but working on a neat way to get the wires into the doors.

Thanks Mikey! The wheels do need a refurb but in decided on which color.I do like the green though. Iv funnily enough never need my boot haha

Around town this thing is quick, normal cars (Astra's, focus' and even a few new golfs) have struggled to keep up. On the motorway its okay but just okay.

The steering wheel is very comfortable though and I'm in the process of slowly returning using bike tape to see what colour I wanna get it stitched professionally.

Nah the kit is really good quality and the fobs actually feel like the genuine Audi items. I do feel like it takes away from the retroness but it adds practicality, especially when its pouring down lol

6x4s over the 6x9s anyday, can't stand butchered parcel shelf's. Need to strip the interior and start laying down some sound deadening but its just been way too cold. Had enough of all the rattles hahaha
