Suspension noise

Featured Replies

Just fitted h&r cup kit 60/40 drop to 6n2 gti with new top mounts and strut top bearings. Now when slowly turning like out of my drive or leaving a junction get a clunk through the suspension and steering. Sounds like strut bearing but have fitted two new ones. Did noticed when car was jacked up fully the spring could be rotated slighltly as has couple dead coils on bottom. Just wondering if anyone else had these issues before or knows of a fix

Sounds like the spring isn't seated properly and is rotating when you turn.

Was it a new kit or second hand?

Could also be a knackered CV joint.

Also just noticed you are local, welcome to the forum :)

Brand new kit only seems like it's coming from drivers side. Need to strip it down again see if a can find anything

If it is just the one side it may be the CV then. Does it happen only on hard lock?

Defenetly not cv joint. Only get it at very slow speed just one knock as steering is turned but sounds like the spring pinging round. The h&r kit a got doesn't have any plastic covering the bottom coils wondering if that would help it stop moving?

Did the standard springs have plastic on the bottom coils? If so I'd say it would be worth swapping them to the new springs.

Also a good chance to make sure everything is seated correctly.

Did you ever find out the cause of this? I'm having the exact same issue with the same suspension kit. There was no rubber/plastic between the spring and strut on the originals which I found odd. I've a feeling its the spring rotating a little as the steering is locked from side to side.

As far as I can see the lower could are binding. was going to try wrapping them in plastic hose see if it cures it. But mine didn't corn with plastic for the coils etc. not all springs need them but have seen dealers retrofitting then on vauxhalls Citroen etc to stop unwanted noise. I only get the noise in my driveway. On the road never hear anything has to be on unsettled ground and at walking speed. But I have new strut tops and bearings fitted along with the kit. Apart from this twang noise every so often it handles great and looks good with this kit.

I have yet to change my top mounts and bearings so when I do that I might cut a piece of rubber and stick it under the spring and see! If it makes no difference I'll dig a little deeper!

id change your top mounts anyway be worth doing.and try rubber on the spots were dead coils hit each other.sounds like a spring jumping on mine but need to look into it further apart from that id perfect height i wanted and handles great last owner had cheap fk coilers that were fucked so splashed out on this kit and that noise is the only thing thats wrong
