I got my Coilovers fitted in Saturday and they all seem to be fine, except for the fact that the rear nearside (left, obviously) squeaks a bit at random intervals. Its always fine on perfectly flat road, but there's not a lot of that in Cornwall. I know that they need time to settle, I'd just like to know if that's all it will be or if it's an indicator of a different problem? I'm going away early Wednesday afternoon and would like to know whether it's okay before braving the motorway.

If I press down on the car on that side, it will squeak, but the shock does appear to be working properly. Ie, it doesn't bounce freely etc.

Did you tighten the bottom bolts with the axle hanging free or with it with weight on it? as it might be the bottom bush in the shock twisting causing the squeak

I think we tightened the bolt with the axle hanging and then jacked up into position. What's the easiest way to remedy that before Wednesday.

It's the side that my friend did so I'm not 100% sure

Jack the car up and put the axle stands under the "arm" of the axle ( make sure you don't crush the brake pipes !!), that way the weight of the car will be on the axle so it will be in it's normal position, then undo and re-torque the bottom bolt.

The squeaking wasn't as bad on the way home from work so it may be settling. However to be on the safe side I'll do that anyway, I just need to find somewhere to do it tomorrow, as my friend's not around and he's about 30 miles away anyway, and my girlfriend's parents drive has the dreaded gravel.

Will altering it again ruin the tracking I had done yesterday? It's a rear wheel so it should be okay, right?

Won't affect the tracking :) If it's not too low? you might be able to crawl under and just undo & re-torque the bolt :)

...it's quite low. To get a trolley jack underneath I have to drive the wheel in question onto a piece of wood.

Didn't think it would affect it, I'll get that done tomorrow.

Could it be possible that I've just done the lower bolt up too tight? Because now I think about it I tightened up that side and I did do it VERY tight.

It is possible. What I would do is as Nige suggested, just undo and re-torque the bottom bolt with the arm in it's usual rest position.

If you have done it up very tight then fixing this while crawling under the might be quite difficult.

If I have to Jack it then I have to Jack it. I can always do it in the lay by as in theory it should only take me 1-2 minutes. Just have to be careful.

It hadn't occured to me that I could have done it up too tight until I really thought about it. I dont have a wrench that I can set the torque on, so I'll just go for 'slightly less tight'

Had a fiddle and it seems to have at least stopped the vibrating I get at low revs. Seems better now, the last of the squeaking will hopefully settle over time.

I'm gonna take my tools with me just in case though!

Had a look at this today because the squeaking's been irritating me. The top mount bolt was VERY tight, so I've loosened it a little and pushing down on that quarter of the car no longer evokes a squeak. Its still tight enough that there's absolutely no play in the components so it should still be tight enough, I hope.

Edit; slightly off-topic, but would the Coilovers from my 6n fit the Caddy based on the same Polo model? Looking into perhaps picking up a small van next and if I could reuse my wheels and Coilovers it would reduce costs.

The front coilovers will fit on the Caddy van.

But the rear is a different setup using leaf springs.

I figured the rears would probably different. When I sell this one then I might just sell on the Coilovers to fund new ones. Might take a bit more digging to find some, but they'd crop up. Is the 1.9tdi engine in the Caddy's similar to the Polo engines?

Not even sure yet, this is just speculation at this point.

The sqeaking crept back over the drive home, so at some point I'm going to have to get the whole thing out and reassemble.
