[Help Please] Diagnosis needed!? //Mk2f polo coupe

Featured Replies

Hi I have just started the car and there was a huge 'disgusting' shaking and grinding noise from the engine. I turned the engine off straight away but the engine shaking, grinding and squealing carried on for another 20/ 30 seconds.

I had ran the car idling for 15 minutes prior and it seemed to be okay. But there are mixed revs and occasional stutter while idling.

I'm quite worried about this as it seems to be a big problem.

* Car has been idle/ off road for few months (most of last year).

* The problem was going on before the car was taken off the road last year. The problem occurs randomly. Sometimes it happens in first gear while in traffic, or when idling.

* Gearbox oil was replaced last winter after a small leak. Problem seems to have occurred since then. But I'm not sure.

Can anybody please help here!?

Thanks a lot

This sounds to be a bit of a tricky one to answer accurately.

Are there any other symptoms? (engine overheating, warning lights showing - does the problem occur when the engine is hot/cold or at any time.)

Any more information that you can give us, might help us to pinpoint your problem.

If your car was fitted with a carburettor, I could understand the running on after turning 'off' the ignition (and would then 'guess' at a possible cause) but I would think that your car has SPI - is this correct?

Regards

Hi, thanks. It normally occurs when cold, but has occurred after an hour drive. No warning lights. Yes, SPI.

The main things is when idling or stopping and starting in first gear.

The heavy shuddering of the car is similar to when the engine shudders/ shakes enormously when changing gear with a full load in the car.. I don't know if this could be connected?...

It seems to be worse when I'm running all the electrics, i.e. CD player, head lights, charging phone, car heating, demister on, etc..

Also, the problem seems to have started after changing the 'reverse light switch' and losing a bit of gear oil. I don't know of that could be connected?..

The worst thing is the noise however as it 'sounds' like there is a lot of damaging being done.
