Such a shame, hopefully the three of them will get snapped up by another channel.

I can see the BBC trying to keep Top Gear going but no one can replace Jeremy.

Didn't Clarkson buy the rights to TG?

Nope, he sold the rest to the bbc couple years ago for £14.8m

Bet he's wishing he didn't sell now

I think they'll try and salvage it but it won't work. I wouldn't like to see the two of them do without him. I hope they stick to what they're all saying and they maybe start something up together. There are all kinds of formats nowadays and they've certainly got plenty of money.

Isn't about the cars anymore and I can't stand clarkson... I won't miss it

I only ever watch the cheap car challenges. Who wants to watch people drive super cars around a track saying the same things over and over again :nea:

Yeah I'm the same really. The specials, and the challenges. Only good parts left and I will miss them.

There's the odd good feature. I liked the one recently about Peugeot drivers, that evoked a few chuckles.

I think it'll be an interesting few months.

There's no question that Clarkson and co will resurface elsewhere, probably continuing to be a real-life Last of the Summer Wine with a sprinkling of racial stereotyping. But will it be a car programme? Who knows.

There's no question Top Gear will continue, either. That's a poisoned chalice if ever there was one, though. The BBC could assemble an incredible cast and produce the best car programme on the planet, but ultimately Top Gear with Clarkson, Hammond and May is like the original Mini. You can build a better car with the same badge, but people who liked the old one won't like the new one. Not because it's worse, but because it's different.

The people I feel for are the myriad employees further down the line. Top Gear Magazine sells by the bucketload but it's certainly helped by an hour-long advert every week. A new format Top Gear will certainly influence how people buy into the magazine. This said, it's actually a separate entity - it's not published by the BBC, so Clarkson could carry on writing for it. Remember it's edited by Tom Ford, who presents Fifth Gear.

Of course there are also companies invested in the Top Gear Live shows, who will feel the burn too.

But here's the thing. At what point do you become so valuable and popular that it's ok to behave that way? I've seen a lot of anti-BBC stuff online today, and people berating Oisin Tymon for ruining their Sunday nights. Let's not forget that, while JC has had an army of people waiting to be offended by things he has said, there have been multiple occasions recently where he has crossed the line. Eventually you have to show people who's boss.

Every dog has its day.

"...and over the line!"

There is no doubt the challenges were the best part of the show. But I like watching the super car reviews too. It's the 'normal' car reviews I find boring. Any idiot with a driving licence can walk into a Ford dealer and drive a new Fiesta. But they couldn't then walk into a Ferrari dealer and drive a 458.

True. I'm just not that into super cars really, as evident by me having to google 458  I'd rather see Clarkson reviewing a mk2 golf vr6 that John Smith built in his garage (an idea for a spin-off youtube show Clarkson could do )

A millionaire without a job, oh my god.

I guess your country and Jeremy himself can live with that very good.

I am sorry for Top Gear, but thats all.

Haha it is like football, the poor folk is watching 22 millionaires playing with a ball...... --> the poor folk is watching millionaires testing cars which nobody from the people in front of the TV's can ever afford.

cheers

A Nazi (according to Jeremy)

I think all genres of jokes must be banned, now. You cant ban racial jokes and still allow blonde jokes, it's hypocritical. Both are poking fun at someone purely on what they were born as.

I have no family from my namesake because they were all murdered - my dad's father escaped soldiers in Poland in WW2, after seeing other members of his family shot and gang-raped. By the time he got to Britain (Scotland) he was a very broken man. But found a wife. My dad's polish surname made things difficult so i was given a western surname, chosen out a comic book, to give me a fresh chance in life here.

If anyone should be offended by jokes about nazis/jews etc then it's me. But i'm not, provided context and/or satire can show it in positive aspect. And because i'm not a touchy liberal left-wing moron like most of the BBC.

I don't blame our Christian6N. It's not his fault. And anyone over three years of age with an IQ above ten can see racial matter for what it is.

Actually no, because my 4yo daughter still thinks everyone in the world is a shade of brown. She doesn't 'get' race yet. But nevermind.

Point is, i thought he was quite funny, even if his jokes were usually cringeworthy. Including the slope one. But you know, seeing that clip doesn't give you cancer.

I also liked old Top Gear of the 80's, and that was invariably clinical. And i also like 5th gear, and always have. And i expect i will like new Top Gear, but not in the same way i liked this 'Clarkson era'. He introduced funny, he broke the mould with the entertainment aspect, i've been reading his column in The Sun ever since i've been getting free newspapers on my table (a few years) and i like him. And i'll probably like whatever he does next.

This is great, because i'll get two shows instead of one.

I'm not condoning violence at work. In fact i fully support his sacking - after all, he got himself sacked deliberately. He didn't think of How Alex Ferguson got away with throwing football boots at players, injuring them in the face. No, he knew he was getting sacked. Unfortunately, those involved kept quiet. They didn't report him. Clarkson wanted to go but if he just resigned, he'd be the bad guy. And yet here, he still wasn't getting sacked. What's a man to do?

So he had to go and report himself, several days later. And it lost him a bit of control, allowed it to get a bit messy, but it's all good. You can never have too much publicity.

So. Here's watching with anticipation, for two new shows..

I'd love to see Vicki,Tiff return to TG like they used too!

Who was that fat geeza who always wrote on the cars screen saying back then you would of paid £££ but now you can pick it up for £££ etc, he was quite decent.

But vicki, tiff and quentin wilson....

OH! EDD CHINA!

Vic, Tiff, Edd = Top Gear!

The only person I remember writing on windscreens was a very young Mike Brewer in Deals on Wheels

Ah yes, he was in the first season of new Top Gear. Don't even know his name or what happened to him.

It was Jason Dawe and the program where he wrote the prices on the windscreen was "Used Car Roadshow" He was replaced on TG by James May in series 2

Those early episodes were gold. Remember the Lotus Lada?

If you want good quality muck-aboutery with cars involved, but don't want scripted chaos, hit up YouTube and get watching Roadkill.

Starting point? Dodge Charger with a motor home engine.

  • Author

Roadkill is pretty awesome, some of the stuff they get away with driving on the public roads is incredible.

And it's real. Best car programme in the world, that one. The fly on the wall documentaries from the States, with the monologues all the way through, are getting a bit samey now.
