Recently purchased a 2001 6n2 (I think) 1.4 Polo.

This Polo seems to be plagued with the usual/typical faults and wondered if others could advise:

1. The drivers side door lock doesn't work. I'm guessing its the usual broken mech that I've red about. My question is where is the best place to get the rebuild kits from? I've seen them on eBay very cheap, but are they any good? Which ones are the best? I assume VW's prices are eye watering...
2. The Drivers side window switches don't work. I haven't checked for voltage, but assume it's a fault with the switches as the passenger side switch works fine. Is there a typical way to repair these, or do I need to look for a working second hand set?
3. The Boot open light is permanently lit when the ignition is on. I've closed the latch by hand with the door open but it didn't make the light do out. Assuming there is a switch on the boot lock mech, is that a common fault and if so, what is the common fix?
4. The battery keeps going flat. I've replaced the battery and the alternator seems fine. It only does this if it is left for numerous days without being used. When its flat, it is proper flat, unlocking the doors from the passenger side doesn't initiate a central locking unlock, the interior light doesn't come on and the ignition displays nothing. I'm guessing this 'could' be due to the faulty window switch, lock or boot open warning light, but are there any other common causes for this? There are no after market items and the stereo is standard.

Yes, yours will be a 6n2.

I had almost the exact same problems when I bought my 6n. As for the door lock kits I've picked up the cheap items (I got mine in Amazon for something silly like £3) and they've been doing the job well ever since. They're a bit fiddly to fit but they do their job. :)

As for the Windows it could be a few things. Check the wires inside the little rubber boot between the door and the car, they can often break because of the pressure they're out under when your door is constantly opened and closed. In my case, water has got in and rusted the wires on the runners and they had snapped, so it's worth getting the door card off and having a look of checking inside the rubber boot doesn't yield any results.

Not sure on number 3. My battery was running flat all the time when I first got mine and it turned out to just be a duff battery. When I replaced it with a Bosch S3 and never had a problem again. If you have a multimeter it's worth checking for voltage drain, iirc there's a guide pinned on how to test your alternator, so it's worth doing that too.

Hi,

Right finally had some time today and got some things fixed.

1. Bought lock rebuild kit from VW (£15) as i was worried about the quality of the cheap eBay/Amazon ones.

2. One of the windows switch in the drivers door is knackered. Reluctant to buy both, can you buy them individually from Seat/VW? They seem to be fairly pricey on eBay. They've got VW / Seat logos on so assume they are interchangeable. The main faulty here is the wiring between the door and the pilar is broken. (approx 4x broken wires). I'm guessing this because they are too short and get yanked over time. What is the best fix for this? buy some correct coloured wire and extend it? does the loom unplug from the door and inside the car easy enough?

4. New battery fixed and working fine.

Also, i need the black plastic surround that goes in the door card and surrounds the door lock pin. Whats this part called? Best place to get it?

Window switches are available from VW/Seat/TPS last time I checked they were around £18

The door wiring loom disconnects from the door post by the big round connector, then remove the loom from the door, that way you can get at the wires better to solder/heatshrink the repair wires in, they break because the drivers door is opened/closed the most and they just fracture with the constant flexing.

Thanks for the reply. VW can't get the door door card trim, they said it is obsolete so I will have to traul eBay or ask if anyone breaking their car is up for selling something so small!

VW also said the door loom is obsolete, if it was less than £50 I would of just bought it. So I've bought a couple of metres of cable. I'll remove the loom and repair it and make the wires a bit longer.

1x window switch from VW was £23! Ouch.

One other question, the car hasn't got any mats. Where are the best place to get some? I want them decent/tailored so they go on the locating lugs, etc. I'd imagine genuine VW ones are excessive....

That's just the Stealership not wanting to make an effort !! the trims for the lock pins are listed @ 0.48€uros which indicates they are not obsolete, have you got a TPS near you ? as I find them willing to put a bit of effort in to make a sale, were as the stealership are only interested if your buying a brand new car or parts for it !!

Making the wires longer will not make them less likely to fracture, it's just the constant flexing that breaks them, you could try stevens VW breakers in Essex, they normally hold plenty of 6N2 parts and reasonably priced
