Put my polo up for sale yesterday and I've had a couple of guys show some interest. However I dont know what to think about one of them, he said he's oversees and wants to send money through PayPal. Dodgy? With all the things you here about people getting scammed I'm a bit sceptical about this guy.

I wouldn't go for it. I had a guy like this when I was trying to sell a MacBook and alarm bells went off and I avoided it. There are plenty of people in the country who will buy your car, it's just not worth the risk.

Also to make a payment over PayPal they would never need your full name or address.

deal with people that can turn up with cash , the marine enginner workign away and paypal are age old scams

SCAM SCAM SCAM.

It's an old scam. The buyer will tell you they want to buy it but can't pick it up so will add money onto the payment for shipping/transport costs by a designated shipping company. The 'shipping' company will then expect you to pay for the transport out of the funds when in fact it is the same scammers. You pay, they never show up and the money was never actually 'real' in the first place so you've shelled out for shipping from your own pocket. That was the old scam anyway.

The give away is the poor English, the profession and excuses as to why they can not come to view. Avoid.

In the past with scam emails I've always had a bit of fun stringy them along then been pretty blunt with a 'Fuck off' after a couple of exchanges. I like to imagine them thinking they're on to something before they feel the bitter disappointment. Sad thing is there are people that will fall for this.

The dodgy English was the thing that I noticed.

But now the scam makes sense as to how they get money from it, only thing I couldn't work out.

Well I'm not sure how they would get it back from paypal as the old scam used to work because the cheque would bounce. Unless of course further down the line they'd make an excuse as to why they couldn't use paypal and had to send a cheque. I'm not sure.

It seems like a scam but I don't see how it could be through Paypal.

If I were you, I would keep the listing going and tell him sorry but your not taking it down until he comes to have a look at it first or at least gets someone he knows to come view it, that way, if he really wants it that bad he'll do it and you'll know he's serious and then take it from there.

Just do what ever your gut says, if you feel like its a scam and something wrong then it generally is.

It's definitely a scam. Just leave it mate. As I said, plenty of people in this country will give you solid cash for it.

itsd a scam - paypal is not that safe either.

I cant remember the details right now but an overseas account which isnt good for the money but takes a few days to verify - which at that point they (Paypal) take the money back off you sort of rings a bell ....

Your money may be safe with paypal but the item isn't.

He will send you 'money' on paypal, he's still in the country I'm sure. He will send his 'friend' (actually him) to pick the car up and sort the V5 out.

They will then sell the car on straight away.

The money gets reversed on paypal, you end up with no car and no cash.

I think he gets the idea that it's a scam.
