HID's. Legal or illegal?

Featured Replies

Just had my HID's installed and someone brought up that they are infact illegal?
Spoke to a mechanic and he said that as long as they are aligned correctly and set up right, they are in fact legal?

Does anyone have any more information on this?

They can be annoying to other motorists when they're SUPER bright. That's about all I can think could be illegal about them, getting pulled over for excessively bright lights.

Well, these aren't actually that bright, its quite an old pair of HID's. Went past a couple of police cars yesterday with them on and i didn't get pulled, but i guess depends on the officer!

Thanks for the reply.

This is a very grey area. They are technically illegal without auto levelling and headlamp washers.

End of the day it all boils down to how strict your local police are, also if they blind other road uses expect to get fisted by the long arm of the law

Hmm, I wonder... is there any way to get auto levelling on a Mk3? Is it possible to DIY such a system assuming one has the manually adjustable headlights already?

MOT fail without the adjusters and washers IIRC. As mentioned, it seems a grey area and some companies that sell the kits do mention legality of the kits. There was some confusion about it a few years ago when they brought in all the new regulations for MOT testers. Thing is to suck it and see. It's unlikely the police would pull you (unless dazzling) but a tester could fail you.

If i were you, I'd junk them and get an uprated headlight loom. Must say its the best practical modification I've made, stands up to my 9n lights no qualms. Or at least hold on to the originals for MOT time

You couldn't do it with manual adjusters you would need to somehow got the motorised ones, it could be done. Me and nige wired mine up easy enough when I fitted xenons on my old 6n2
