Hi, my rev counter and clock do not work, not a major issue but its really annoying, needle doesnt move a bit and my clock has turned into a timer, has this happened to anyone before and found a way to fix it? Ta

Have you checked the fuses ? #'s 10, 20 & 27 all 5amp

Yep all fuses checked, could it be rev sensor? Presume its somewhere on the gearbox?

No the sensor is on the camshaft or crankshaft depending on what engine code you have? This is sent to the engine ECU and from that via the CAN bus to the speedo unit, if you have a code reader that will give live data you should be able to see the RPM if that's OK then you have a fault in the speedo unit :(

It's a 1.2s 65hp. Do you have a picture of the sensor? Had a look today and the only sensor I can see is on top of the engine. Thanks

You have two sensors G40 & G28

#4 in this picture is the G40 sensor


This is the G28 sensor, it's on the rear of the engine by the joint between the engine & gearbox


It is most likely to be the G40 as if the other one fails it should stop the engine, but if the G40 fails the engine ECU uses the G28 as a backup, having said that as your also having other problems with the speedo I would see if there are any fault codes relating to it

I'll be able to work from that thanks, it's not the speedo thats broken, in the middle of my rev counter is a small clock and that's not working either. I'll go buy me a sensor tomorrow and hopefully that does the trick. Thanks.

I would try and get it on a code reader that does live readings before you go and buy any new sensors, it will save you money in the long run, rather than changing bits in the hope of a cure

What sort of diagnostic software can I use? That will do live readings and show codes?

The best for any VW is VCDS/Vagcom it's free to download the lite version from www.ross-tech.com it will run on any Windows laptop winXp or newer, then you'll need a compatable lead, plenty on ebay, in your case you'll need a CAN bus compatable lead

Just had a look at leads, far too many to choose from, one said can bus was introduced in 2003 and my car is a 2002 is that a problem?

Can bus is for 2001 onwards so if it says its for Can bus that'll be OK

finally got the car hooked up to vag com, everything seems fine, apart from lambda sensor intermittent fault. Done live readings and all seems fine, could see the rpm on screen. But still the Rev counter won't work. Is this an issue with the clocks? And will I have to replace the entire cluster? Thanks

If the RPM signal was available to see it means the sensors are OK and the problem is with the speedo unit, its not an individual replaceable item so it will be a complete unit and as it is also the immobilizer control unit it will need to be coded to your keys and ECU.

Oh wow, wishing it was a sensor. How do I go about sorting this? Can I pick up some clocks from a scrappy? And can I code it all myself?
