Mk2 Polo Coilovers Problems

Featured Replies

Ok so this car is driving me mad!

We started by fitting all the suspension and had to replace most part (hubs, discs, bearings, tie rods)

Fitted everything and then after driving it about 20 miles it fell over... The ARB had come out of its housing with the outer bush.

The bush was new and fitted by a garage and to get it in they had chopped the bush in half.

I though this might be why it fell over so we thought we may as well get polybushes. We fitted them and the same thing happened before we got out the driveway.

This time the bush stayed in the housing but the bar and the nut came through (note it only pops out on the near side).

We then realised that the rubber cups that sit between the top of the shock and the chassis was upside down (my fault) but turned them over and the same thing happened straight away.

We then bought the lowering ARB blocks that replace the inner blocks and I put washers between the nuts and outer ARB bushes. Now the ARB doesn't pop out but there is a knock and the wheels actually move within the arch before the car moves and then scrapes on the arch. Also with every rotation of the wheels the near side one moves more and more out of line to the point where the the nearside is full lock left and the drivers is straight

Please help as I think I'm now going slightly insane lol

Cheers

Zack

it should have always had washers on the arb ends ..cutting bushes in half to install them sounds like a very poor practice from a garage

as for the other problems sounds like something is blatently wrong or loose , maybe post up a load of pictures or get someone to look at it who knows what they're doing

Yeah I'll try and get some pics later. It's odd because everything is tight. Has anyone had any issues similar when fitting coilovers?

Here you go all, a few pictures of the set up. If some could please help I'm really stuck here, even if someone from East Sussex could come check it out. I've worked a Golf Cabby loads but these are very different cars lol

Thanks

Zack

theres sposed to be a big washer both sides of the arb on the end bush

Here's a photo to help, can see a big curved washer either side of the bush.

Also, I'm sure there should be more thread coming through the top of the top cap, is the castle nut fully tightened?

tbh if the garage didnt bother with the washers which in my mind are obviously needed to stop the bush pulling out , then what else have they left off or bodged up

kinda thinking it needs going over to see what else theyve left off

not much thread showing out the top of the steering end either

Yeah I see what you mean with the garage although that was the only thing they did, I'll try putting a washer on the other side as well and see if that makes any difference. I'll also double check the tie tod is as tight as possible. I thought the thread at the top was pretty low when we fitted it to be fair but its real tight. When you say castle nut I presume it's the one at the top mate?

regarding the wheel moves out when i push it along bit....have you ajusted the tracking so the wheels look paralel? it will need setting up accuratley once its safe to drive

  • Author

Yeah so they are parallel and then with more movement the nearside point further out.

then i would set the wheels straight ahead and carefully roll the car forward and see whats letting that wheel move out , tie rods should be holding them straight

maybe get it on stands and again set the wheels straight ahead , get someone to hold the sterring wheel while you fight with all your strength to move the wheel in any direction , something must be loose or have massive slack in it

  • Author

Yeah ok mate ill give that a go later, although if anyone has any other ideas let me know :)

Hey, don't remember if I mentioned this before but the top silver plates spin and lift when the wheel turns. Any ideas?

It's suppose to do that :)

Top nuts as previously mentioned should have more thread showing I'm sure, surely they go down more or maybe the special castle type nut may not be all the way down and stopping the top cap nut going down enough

Are they really supposed to?! Surely they aren't clamped down enough on the chassis for that to happen?

There is much more thread now than what was before but it still didn't work.

That will happen unless you get lowering top caps which aren't as deep, on the top caps you have on the pic the thread should be way more, I think its 6n top caps that are best used for lowered mk2s

But we managed to get the thread far further through than that. Would the top caps really make a difference? I don't follow how basically lol
