Featured Replies

I have got down to the LED's in the instrument cluster and these are right angle smd 4040 packages.

And am looking to change the colours to white, so my question is. Does anyone know where to get 4040 white smd packages.

If i can find these i will be posting a how to video. Else ill just use flat LED's

I usually use flat ones if I don't have the 90 ones.

Are you wanting to change the number to white? If so I did this before and it looks really good, nice and clean looking and very easy to read.

However I wouldn't use white on the lcd screens as that would be too bright, unless you changed the polarity, then that would be awesome as it would be just white digits no backlighting.

Also, you can cut the track or lay new wires to link the needles LEDs and run them off an ignition line to have them always lit up with ignition.

I've done this on my 6n and looks awesome plus easier to see where the needle is in daylight.

This is a popular mod on mk4 golfs and some audis but that's done with coding, could possibly be the same on 6n2? Not sure if anyone has tried before.

Did you have any issues with needles not working?

Sometimes that happens. I usually turn the needles backwards I'e past its stop to break any glue etc that might be holding it in, but with the temp and fel this is hard. You should avoid pulling the needle any further if the shaft is coming out with it. I have not been able to get the gauge to work again if the shaft has come out.

Just but gentle and methodical and it will be fine.

I have 2 or 3 cluster here that you can use for parts if you do get stuck etc, always good to have a spare.

The order is speedo and tacho needles of, usually very easy. Then the warning light bezel just clips in. Then the numbers fascia comes off as one piece. The led screens are held down with a grey plast trim, this is just clipped in. Remove the screens, ten you get access to the needles for fuel and temp. You migh be able to gently take the board out with the needles on if you point them both down. If you do this then they are much easier to take of properly once the trims are out the way.

You now have a bare board, don't do what I did at first and remove all the LEDs at once because it's very easy to get mixed up and there aren't any diagrams to show there polarity. Do one by one. This also means you can test as you go along, once finished leave the board bare and connect to car and switch only the lights on to test, using the ignition without the cluster in will set the airbag light on and will ned resetting.
