Spline size?

Featured Replies

Hi I've been looking on various forums and I'm confused about the different spline sizes. I have a 87 mk2 polo which I think has a small spline. So I was wondering if all vw's from this era have the same spline? As I'm looking to buy a traditional mountney boss and was wondering if a golf spline would fit as I can't find one that specifically says mk2 polo.

mk2 golfs were the same spline and also came in big /small ...so yeah if you find out which one you have then a golf one will fit

they're all small spline but the big spline is a pressed on adaptor so you can also swap between the two anyway

Okay cool thanks for the help

I think an 87 is a Large spline actually, at least one with a large spline adapter on

So I would be able to take the adapter off if the boss is small spline?

I think I may have a boss for the big spline type in the garage, I can check tomorrow if your interested.

I think it has a moteney wheel attached to it too.

From what I have seen the adapter can be pulled off, but there is a spring behind it (at least on the later 6n) so not sure what would happen to that (other then flying at your face) as it would just scrape against the boss if left on.

Okay cool going to take my wheel off tonight and see if I can if there is an adapter

no matter how I've tried, I have never been able to get the adapter off, although it is possible. As mentioned, there's a big spring which will turn that adapter into a 50 cal if your'e not careful

nah they dont come off like a bullet , you need a bearing puller idealy , or i think if the column is off you can tap the shaft and it pops the adaptor off

I've done it on mine but cant recall if i fitted one or removed it lol
