CLIMAtronic: fan works only in stage 2

Hi, I'm Marcos from Brazil.

I have a VW POLO 1.6 Sportline with CLIMAtronic AC. Two weaks ago the fan do not turn off, never. I discovered a problem in the AC command. I cut the #9 wire (maroon/green) and I put a diodo+resistor in serie, by passing, and linked the #9 again. This worked and the fan was turn off.

So, if I do not use AC the fan works perfectly: the fan turn on in stage 1, if the temperature is hot.
My problem is using AC: if I turn on AC the fan works in stage 2, infinitely.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi,

I did the Climatronic auto-test and the results are: 4Fa 31b 2C1 2C2

PS: 31b could be 318 because this last char is small to see the diference.

Do you mean the radiator fan, or the blower fan inside the cabin?

From my understanding the fan (radiator)!will switch to high if the temperature is above a certain level or the AC gas pressure is too high or low. Have you had the gas checked?

From memory I remember reading about the pressure sensor itself failing on similar year golfs so this may also be a cause.

If you can tell me your engine number I can post up the diagrams of the climatronic system as there are 2 or 3 variants so wire colours will be different.

I meant radiator fan.

I haven't checked the gas because the AC temperature is good, freezes fast ... but, could exists some problem high or low pressure??

I did the same a friend to stop the fan, like this:

The problem with getting the correct wiring diagrams is yours will probably be a totally different spec from the European models that Dixy and I have.

If it is the same as the UK spec the two level temperature switch in the radiator feeds a ground to the fan control unit and this switches power out to the fan Hi or LOW speeds, in the picture you can see the three main power supplies and the Black/Blue wire is also a supply from fuse # 25, the other two wires go to the climatonic control panel Brown/Green to pin 8 & Brown/Blue to pin 9

I said wire #9, but I meant #8.
First I tried to "change" the wire #9 but not resolved, so I discovered that the right wire is #8.
I used the photo of my friend and the diagrams below.
But using your diagrams or my, do you have any tips for me to do about this problem?

If your wiring is the same as the UK spec, by cutting the wire stops the high speed fan, I would suspect an internal fault in the climatronic panel ??

Was it like that from when you got the car? as it might be modification for your hotter environment ??

With the AC off, have you tried shorting the fan switch to check it runs in LOW & HIGH speeds & stops when you disconnect the thermal switch? as that should rule out the fan control unit as being at fault

I do not know if is the same spec.
If I cut the #9 black/blue, everything stop; the same with #8.
If I do not use AC everything works well. Yes, I suspect an internal fault in the climatronic panel, but I need discard everything else.
I have this POLO since December 2009 and everything worked just fine. I bought it 0Km.

If the fans work in LOW & HIGH speeds with the AC off, that indicates the fan control unit is working OK and you cutting the wire from the climatronic panel stops the fan, then I would say the fault is almost certainly in the climatronic control

I could not test HIGH speed, even without AC, because the temperature is not so hot to start the high speed... but I think the problem is in the climatronic control.


Another problem is I did not found a new control. Here in Brazil, buy directly on VW costs about ~R$ 3,000 (£ 1 = R$ 4.6504). :crazy:

The correct part-number is 6q0907044F for a 9N3.

I think the difference is because I have the Sportline version (the console color is silver)... and R$ 1527 is expensive too! Here we pay 60% for tax to import!

I will try something: the wire #8 controls the stage 1 of radiator fan so, I will try to use a potentiometer to limit the signal.

If the difference between the E & F is just the colour, you could swap the internals into your silver casing ??

I don't know if the color is the only difference and I need to take a look first because I don't know if they could be separated.

the internals can deffinatly be transferred, there are just clips on the rear section and comes away from the front fascia.

the letter at the end usually means the revision, ie an H would have more fixes etc then an A. as long as it looks the same, ie it doesnt have buttons in different places then it will work. from what i have seen there arent any variations in in the wiring like different sensors etc, but as nigel says above that is for the european models and from your pictures above it seems yours is built in brazil? and it seams its stamped as 9n9?

these are also fitted to various other vag cars, like skoda and seats so perhaps just searching for climatronic unit etc might bring up a few cheaper units.

i have dealt with similar issues on BMW and new minis where there is a blown capacitor inside these units. these were quite obvious when i opened the control units because they were missing. maybe having a look inside for any obvious faults might be an idea.

also, a common problem with the manual controls is spilled drinks from the cup holder above. was there any liquids spilled on it recently?

that is definitely a 9n3 :)

i just remembered something, there is a separate fan controller in the engine bay. i have heard of these going wrong and either not running the fan at all, or fan always on, which you have.

the climate controller will send signals to the fan controller and it will switch the fan as needed. i read somewhere that the second stage will come on as a safety feature, for instance if it doesn't read a certain sensor.

the fan controller is cheap as its used in many vag cars. i am not sure where it is on your model, but they are usually near the battery.

check the connections for corrosion, an the wires for damage near the plastic connector.

Hi,

Just a feedback for you guys. Problem solved.
I installed a new relay connected on switch box below the battery, specifically in #9 black/blue wire. Another conection is directly on compressor.
So, when I turn on the AC, the switch box receives the signal, the new relay also receives and turn on the compressor.
