Hi all.

Done a quick search but couldn't find whether this had been covered or not.

I want to give my standard BBS wheels on my 6N2 a quick tidy up as they're looking as rough as. Am I right in thinking they're a 2-piece design? And now for the really daft question - does this mean that I can remove the wheel, unbolt the face and refurb that and at the same time, give the barrel (with the tyre still attached) a quick once over with some paint (or try and polish it?)?

The GTI wheels are a split piece rim and you can remove the face. IIRC it's an M8 spline bit to remove the face. They can be a bit of a pig to remove though. It pays to be overly cautious.

Be very very very slow when undoing them splines, they like to just sheer off. I cant stress it enough.

And dont forget to use as much lubricant as you have!

I need to do mine soon. They're matt black with a flash red rim, and I managed to kerb them. ><

Unsure what colour the black is! So I may just have to redo them altogether!

As above its a spline head bolt. They are titanium and the corrosion between the alloy rim and the bolts threads sometimes have a weld like hold.

I poured oil down the join between the rim and face a good few times. Then when you put the socket into the bolt, make sure it's seated square and give it a few whacks down with a hammer. Then make sure you have a good hold of the bar and hold the socket square as you turn. Don't over do it as the head will other break off (this is good) or the splines will strip meaning you have to drill the bastards off.

If you break a head off, then once you get the face off, you can heat the stud up and use mole grips to remove it.

I have done a good 10 or so sets of these now so I have spare bolts etc if you need some. I have never painted the rim as to me it defeats the point of them. That said if you paint the rim a different colour it could look good, just painting it silver to me looks lazy.

I. Have sanded them down by hand in the past but if they are in a bad way ie turned completely black, then getting then shot blasted is way easier. If they have only cracked etc then get some paint stripper on them and remove all the clear coat. Then it's wet and dry time, work your way up from say 00 to at least 1200, at which point it should be mirror like anyway. I had used autosol at this point and it looks great for about a day or two then it goes blotchy. I now use proper metal polish resin bars and good quality polishing wheels. This gets expensive but I have a metal polishing problem so I went all in.

The faces again can be sanded by hand but depending on there condition can be a very difficult task. Shot blasting is the only way to get completely trough the weapons grade powder costing they use on them.

Also, bolt wise I have in the past swapped to M8 Allen bolts. This just needs a pillar drill and a tap set. The head of the bolts fits nicely into the space the originals do, plus if you wanted gold bolts they are only around £35 for 100 as apposed to £120 for 64 m7 bolts on eBay.
