I use a scotchbrite wheel attached to a drill to remove any paint and prep the area to be polished, you can get different coarses too, you want to work the metal until it is smoothish to the touch and remove any harsh scratches with it, then re smooth with the next pad. Once that's finished I use a sizzle mop, u can get a kit from eBay for about 20 quid. U get 3 coarses of mop and 2 compounds, start with the coarse mop and brown compound and just keep going around the rim. Take your time with this if don't the end result will look pants. You want it to be as near as you can to completely smooth, then change to the middle mop and use the blue compound and repeat the above. Take your time. Then finally I use auto sol liquid metal polish, smear it around the rim and use the third fine mop to work it in then remove the haze when finished with a polishing cloth. It all takes a lot of time for a really good finish. Hope that helps.
