exhaust manifolds.. 1.4 16v AFH..

Featured Replies

I'm after some help.

I have just put a 1.4 16v AFH lump in my mk1 golf and I'm struggling to find a decent exhaust manifold to use / mod to fit. I currently have an ebay manifold from a polo 6n 99 but the ports on it are crap.

my question is, would a 'Ashley' manifold from a lupo 1.4 16v fit?

it will fit the AFH head yes

Daz_derby. Thanks for the reply, just what i was after.

Next question, are the port sizes the same? Don't want to strangle the AFH with un-port matched manifold.

The AFH has unique ports. The stock manifold is actually pretty good but weighs a ton.

The manifolds from early '00s 16v engines do bolt on, but the ports are narrower and a fraction taller - i'll bet a stock AFH iron manifold will flow better than a tubular manifold made for the later design head.

MikeyMK thanks for the reply. you're not the first person to say that.. umm food for though. the thing is any manifold I get I will need to mod to fit my golf, just trying to work out the best option. quite tempted to order an Ashley manifold and see what its actually like.

i have a raceland one and the ports were almost exactly the same shape

the manifolds ports were a TINY bit smaller at each side so i matched the manifold to the head and left the head without any work other then smoothing the casting marks. honestly i dont see the shape of it making any negative effects but i had alot of time on my hands at that point :)

i cant comment on the standard one as i didnt have it, or any other 421 types.

i guess you can chop the manifold just before the joint and then make up a section to meet the golfs centree box? not sure on the golfs design but i would plan for a flexi joint somewhere in there.

Dixy, thanks for the reply. the ebay manifold (looks like a raceland one) I have all looks ok but the No.4 port is about 5mm off, I have shaped it to suit the gasket but not happy with how it will flow as the pipes are welded to the flange slightly offset also.... perhaps I got a duff one? trouble is I got it about a year ago now so no chance in taking it back.

as for fitment the layout is very similar to a polo so only a few mods needed, like shortening the down pipe part to aid clearance of the ARB and lower K bar.

I have ordered a Ashley one to see what that's like.....

well.....

I ordered one and it sort of fits. The manifold layout is fine but the ports are the wrong shape, the pipe sizes are good so a solution would be to weld a AFH flange to the manifold....

The manifold height is a lot better compared to the eBay one and will fit over my ARB and K-bar with a little mod....
