Newbie needs advice (ecu issues)

Featured Replies

Hi guys my name is allan, I'm 33 currently living in Ayrshire s/wscotland, looking into buying a 2001y reg polo estate 1.6 8v (apf engine),

Bit of a mixed car history, vaux Renault pug seat ford etc, love Tinkering with motors, usually general repairs/servicing etc, I DONT DO ELECTRICS their my biggest nightmare, enjoy bit of a mountain biking ( usually down hill stuff )

I currently work with the local council as a grass cutting monkey, also do a bit part time taxi driving

As stated above, looking to buy a polo 1.6 estate, throwing up Engine control module fault code, I've had some one look at ecu, 3 breaks inside due to corrosion ingress, the part is a Siemens and part number 06k906033a, will other seimens ecus work, I understand about Sind being coded etc but I was wondering if it were possible there are other ecus that I can practicly plug in and drive off

Welcome to the forum.

An ECU from the same engine code would be suitable, to be safe check that the ECU part number matches. The Polo estate is actually a Seat Cordoba underneath I believe, so you may have better luck finding an ECU from one of them.

The issue you will run into is the immobiliser. Each ECU is coded along with your key and ignition barrel I think, I've also heard clocks in some cases too. There may be ways around this but it could turn out expensive.

The parts list only shows that part number as compatable :(

If I were to change ecu, key, and reader, would this work, I know it sounds like a poor bodge job, was thinking leave original ignition but have reader and corresponding key hidden inside steering column plastic surround, my thought on car originally are it's cheap, my mrs is learning to drive and thought this would be ideal for her with the kids

You will need the ECU, Keys & Immob control box, you don't need the reader around the ignition switch, it is a passive part of the system, it just reads the info from the key.

That engine is also fitted in Golf, Bora inc estate versions, Mk3 Ibiza (99-01) & Cordoba 99

Am I correct thinking that it needs to be from a 1.6 with same engine code, but ecu doesn't need to be identical numbers so long as I have key imob box ecu and keys

Sorry if I'm coming across as a thick git lol

The only ECU listed for your engine code is the one you posted earlier, so it should be the same part number :) then you'll need the key/lock set & the immob box from under the dash, but it might be easier to see if that company I linked could repair your ECU as it would save a lot of time in fitting new locks & immob box

Hi & welcome!

I hope you enjoy your time on the forum.
