6n2 fuel filler blocked?

Featured Replies

Went to fill up with diesel today and straight away a gush of fuel shot out all over my feet. It took ages to fill up just 8 litres as I had to pump in slowly. Any ideas what the problem is? 6n2 tdi 2001.

Not sure how they made the tank for the tdi, but on petrol ones there is usually a breather pipe.

This is a smaller pipe from the top of the tank and as you add fuel it pushes the gas out and vents near the filler, usually behind the cap ie top of the system so it gets put back into the tank. I doubt there would be a physical blockage but it is possible.

You could push the little safety flap open with a screw driver and shine a torch (battery operated, DO NOT use a lighter, matches or any open flames, that means no cigarettes in your mouth either) and look as far down. It could be something obvious but chances are it's pressure related.

Worst case is you will need to remove the filler neck and clean it out.
