I would have thought they would do it, such an easy adjustment.....but true, it is pretty much a pass!

The guys I am using doesn't actually do the tests himself, he's just a little back street garage, but takes them about 1/2 miles further for testing...next time maybe I go straight to the source!

Still not got the car back, but it's apparently booked in for its retest in the morning!

But managed to tidy up the garage at little

And get the afh engine on the stand, not 100% what I'm doing with it...suggestions?

Finally got the car back, so am not fully insured, MOT'ed and taxed!!

The guy painted the welding black so I am going to sort that out tomorrow and take some better picks.

Drove the car the other day properly for the first time and the engine never appeared to get up to temperature.

So decided to change out the thermostat

Old versus new, slight difference between them. Ran the car for half an hour and it all appeared to be working correctly, and has new coolant to boot.

So a couple of weeks ago I got some secondhand wing mirrors from Steven (kwijibo_coupe) for a bargain price. Yes they needed a little attention, stone chips and cracks, but at the price other people were asking I had to take these!

On and off for the last week I have been sanding, filling, sanding, priming, sanding, priming, and painting them.

I wish I'd taken a before picture. There are a few flecks of dust in them, but who is ever going to get that close? (also, i'd given up after I managed to chip the first load of top coat while fitting the covers back on the mounts )

I know my car isn't black, but it was my wifes choice of colour.

Just fitted them to the car, they look alot better than the hand painted old one.

It turns out the drivers side mirror was actually a 6N item and the passengers a 6N2, both painted silver by hand. I may see if I can rescue them, but to be honest they are probably scrap.

So I have been away for 7 weeks, I've seen a lot of the North Sea!!

But while I was away this arrived...

So anyone in East Yorkshire need ing codes read etc, drop me a line.

I'll plug it into mine tomorrow and see what surprises it throws up

So I did a read on my ECU today and was pleasantly surprised with a total of 2 faults.

 

17978 & 01176 - Which both related to immobilizer....and are because while I was away my wifes key came apart and the chip fell out without here knowing!

 

A few goodies arrived today...

 

 

GTi front hubs

 

 

G60 Calipers

 

 

280mm discs

 

And I am picking up a complete rear beam with disc brakes after the weekend, just going to spruce it all up before fitting.

 

All part of the master plan.....

 

 

A productive afternoon, I stripped the front hubs down

 

 

and split the engine & head apart ready to be checked over by my local machine shop

 

 

Picked up my rear beam last night it was ready earlier than expected, but something was niggling me over night.

 

So first thing this morning I went out and measured the bushing....this is not a 6n2 rear, the bushes are 57mm and not 72.5mm. So I have a 6n!!

 

So contacted the people I got it from, and they are going to do me a swap for the correct one. Just waiting to hear when it'll be ready.

 

I'll be keeping the calipers etc, as that was the main reason I wanted this. So that I can do the swap in one day, as everything will already be cleaned up similar to the front.

Well done for spotting that while you did lol. Not something I would even notice until offering it up lol

It was one of those 2am thoughts that wake you up, but I resisted the urge to go into the garage and start measuring things until I got up.

 

I knew they bush sizes were different because of my scrapped Blurple 6n, I have a pair sitting on my shelf.

Soo, went to swap my rear beam today and this time I got the correct one. When the guy brought it out I saw that they had left the calipers, the agreement was to swap just the beams over.

 

So like any right minded, civic orientated person with a good sense of right and wrong.....I didn't mention it and drove away at a speed that didn't arouse suspicion!!

 

Unfortunately this delay means I will not be able to get the parts powder coated (or the bolts plated) before I am due to go away to work again next week and my wife has refused to collect them for me. So everything is going to have to sit for 6 weeks while I am way, and it'll be the first thing I do when I come back. Not to worry though I have tonnes of other things to be getting on with in preparation for the brake swap that I can fill the next week with.

 

 

 

 

Stripped the new rearm beam down,  2 rounded bolts....the previous one only had 1!! Now I need to work out the best/easiest way to get the old bushes out.

 

Last week I got myself a DeWalt 18v Impact Wrench, best tool I have ever bought. Made light work of all the bolts on both beams, and including the hub nuts.

 

So next I started de-rusting the stub axles, I read somewhere a while ago that you can strip rust by using brick acid. I've had the acid since the start of the year and now seemed like the prefect opportunity to test it out. Firstly I knocked off as much loose rust and scale as I could....So here is the before picture

 

 

During, the acid (as seen behind the container) is clear. After about 5 minutes it had gone green and smelly...

 

 

This is them after about 20-25 minutes, all that is left is bits of scale that I couldn't knock off. So I am going to leave it a few hours and see what happens, possibly even over night. This will have saved my a few hours of wire brushing and effort, not that I am lazy...but if there is an easy way of doing something I'll be there.

So washed, dried, kurust-ed and painted my stub axles today, they look alot better.

 

 

Also set fired to my rear beam...

I scored the inner surface a little prying them out, so will have to go over the area with my dremel.

 

My new front hubs have been getting the acid treatment as well today, one is done and kurust-ed, the other is still pickling in the acid (i didn't have a container big enough for both hubs)

Nice work on the stub axles. I'll need to get some of that acid for myself.

Got the second hub out of the acid this morning, i'd say 70% of the rust had come off and the rest was softened.

 

 

5 minutes with a wire wheel and it was all shiny

 

 

And then I Kurust-ed it, and am now waiting for it to dry so I can do the other side. then I can give it a lick of paint.

 

First hub completed, there is a little surface rust on the areas that were masked off. But apart from that it looks quite good!

 

I go my hands on brake master cylinder from a Sharan, they have a 25mm bore and the same bolt pattern to the standard.

 

 

Only problem is that the internal bore depth is about 8mm shallow...

 

 

So I have made adapter plate, trimmed the studs down and added a threaded sleeve

 

 

 

Them some small M8 bolts to attach the master cylinder, hopefully it'll work out. Especially with the brake upgrade I have planned!

 

 

Dropped the engine off at the machine shop this afternoon for them to work on the head and block.

 

Cylinder head - skim, check/re-cut valves and guides, and fit new stem seals (I don't have a long reach spring compressor is all)

Block - Hone, check or replace rings and bearings

 

I am away with work Thursday for 6 weeks, so they should have plenty of time to get it done.

This will be closest thing to a new 6n2 that you can get.

I am back on dry land after 6.5 weeks away from home, so time to get on with some Polo things.

 

Yesterday I took all the engine and rear suspension bolts to the platers, should get them back in a little over a week. Also, the rear beam and engine mounts to be powder coated, unfortunately their blaster is on holiday for the next 2 weeks...then I am on holiday the 2 weeks after that, so should get everything back in a little over a month.

 

The engine builders haven't finished with the engine, even though when i messaged them 3 weeks ago I was told everything was fine and I should be able to pick it up when I get home!!

 

I have a lot of painting and prep work to do for the brake change, and cleaning of engine parts to do....so I will be busy, hopefully some progress to report later today.
