Insuring two cars

Featured Replies

Hello all!

I have a MK3GT and a MK2 C (as a cheap runner, courtesy of eBay!) currently the GT is off the road due to some required repairs, and the C is the runner, which the girlfrind is also insured on.

The GT is ready for getting back on the road, but I rang the insurance company and they said i'll have to insure the 2nd car on another (2nd) policy, but with 0 no claims... What??

Is this right?

Surely its me that has earned the NCD and that should be the case no matter what I drive? and indeed how many!!

Has anyone else experienced this?

Is there a way i don't have to pay out loads??

Hope you can help.

:crybaby::cry::puke:

I saw an advert on telly yesterday for Admiral Multi-car. It's a new thing they've started doing.

I'm sure if it's successful all the other companies will follow suit.

one policy = one car. you can add drivers all day long.

but statring a second policy you should get some kind of discount from your current insurer if you stay with them

edit : admiral do it now *goes and looks into it*

Hmmm, not bad. tho for me to insure the Golf GTi and G40 with mods declared & 6 points, with 3 years NCB, it comes to:

£1400 :-s

Thanks for posting so quickly you chaps!

Just had look myself, interesting, but it seems that it would be cheaper if i insure as a new policy with direct line, this way my girli get a no-claims discount too!

Its a good idea though, the old multicar thing...

Yeah, I can see other insurance companies joining the act. Then it will become a lot more competitive.

There is so much variation between quotes if you shop around that I can well imagine it being cheaper at the moment to buy two seperate policies.

It's a good idea long term tho...

i think admiral are aiming it at a household, say mom dad and kid all on one big policy. it makes sense really and as soon as another place starts doing it the prices should go down..

that said they already have quite a good foothold as I'm pretty sure even without compettition they will have made it cheaper than having two separate policies.

some companys will only let you use ncb on one car at a time

...so would you say its another case of, insurance companies charging what the hell they like and we have to make do? I can nearly understand these people who dont bother, the cost really eats in to the 'do-ing up money pot' :crybaby:

I think HIC do something where you can insure 2 cars on one policy, or give you a discount on a second policy, or something like that anyway.

I know direct line do discounts for second cars too.

most companies do.

thats why i rang up when i was getting my quotes. you can give so many more details over the phone that will drop your quote

Footman James will insure a fleet, my mate has 10 cars on one policy with 7 drivers.

Footman James can be a bit funny about young drivers. They wouldn't insure me on my kit car when I was 23 because it was a 2.3. Even though it's a 2.3 normally aspirated diesel with about 55bhp.

If your fully comp you can usaully drive any other car 3rd party with the owners consent. If you're the owner just give yourself permisson to drive the car!

or register it in a family members name & drive it...

Be careful though, lots of insurers removed this perk a while back

Nah you can't do that, if your the registered owner you legally have to have insurance for that car that you own. However if you can get a family member/mate to be the registered owner (on paper) then you can drive it on your own fully comp, but remember it will only be TP only when you drive it. The downside is that some policies state that this only applies if the car is insured by the registered owner. But some policies only state that you can drive any other vehicle (that your licenced to drive) that you don't own. Just check out the small print.
