Not been here in a while, but I'm looking for some help!

Recently I picked up a 2001 6n2 GTI, had no troubles for the first couple weeks but now got some niggles and this problem..

Yesterday morning I went to my car to find both windows all the way down.. On winding them back up they went half way up, before putting themselves back down! They then went up ok. This morning I've gone out to find the passenger window down! It took a few flicks of the switch but it eventually went up, very slowly, and my batteries near flat.

I'm at a complete loss! Have spent the last hour or so searching here/uk-polos/google, and it seems windows can cause common issues, but I couldn't find anything relating to the issue I have? The windows were working fine prior to this, however the central locking hasn't worked since I've had the car, could this be related somehow?

I'll check the wiring between door and pillar later on as that seems common, any other ideas?

It's possible they need re-activating due to a battery low voltage/disconnected, So try this below, but also have a good look at the wiring in the flexy tubes

Window regulators: Perform initialisation (activation)

Electric windows: Perform initialisation

Note

The automatic opening and closing features for the electric windows do not function after disconnecting and reconnecting the vehicle battery. The electric windows must be initialised before a new vehicle is delivered. The vehicle battery must not be disconnected after initialisation.

WARNING

After vehicle battery has been disconnected and reconnected the roll-back function of the electric window regulators is disabled. Severe pinching injuries could result!

Perform the following procedure to initialise the electric windows:

– Close all doors and windows completely.

– Lock vehicle from outside at driver door or front passenger door.

– Unlock vehicle.

– Lock vehicle again from outside at driver door or front passenger door. Hold key in lock position for at least 1 second.

Will be getting a new battery tomorrow i expect so will try that once it's fitted. With my central locking not working would it effect that initialisation?

This problem could also be related to your vacuum pump which controls the central locking. It's located in the boot. I know your central locking isn't/wasn't working but both the central locking and electric windows are on the same fuse. Every time my vacuum pump electrical connectors get wet (I have a problem with water leaking into the boot area and over my vacuum pump sometimes) it sends the electric windows and central locking mental.

I had this problem when I had a weak battery. A new Bosch S5 installed and sorted.

Welcome to the Forum.

As all of the connections to the pump are flexible, it is fairly easy to move the pump to 'higher ground' to avoid it getting wet.
