T889SNP - Ellie

Featured Replies

I was thinking yesterday that it would be nice to show my baby to you guys. So, this is...Ellie(named after my team leader). It's not in the best condition, but slowly I shall make her like she was on day one.
She is a 1.6 automatic estate, with(and this is the "wow" thing) genuine roofbars and a towbar. Everybody keeps buzzing me that the roofbars, combined with the automatic gearbox and the fact that she's an estate turns her into a pretty rare Polo. I really don't know if it is so, but I don't care about.

For the moment, I need to fix:
- driver's door lock
- change driver side front wing
- 4 new tires
- all belts of the engine(they are squeeling while running)
- change the licence plates(deteriorated)

The baby came to me with some bad luck: 2 fines in 2 days and a neighbour bumped my left front wing. All in 2 days. :-(

Anyway...my first question to you guys is: should I let her in an original state or should I modify it? Untill now, the only thing modified will be the stereo(want something with usb)

And I've hit my first problem. And guys, I really could use some advices on this one.
So, I've started to handle the driver's door lock problem.

The problem: with the key inside the lock, you coudn't rotate either left or right the key. Or open the door by key. You could feel that the spring inside was either missing or broken.

So I took the handle down. Due to the nature of key not rotating, I had to take off the door card in order to release the handle from the inside hinge. When I finally got the handle out, suprise: there was no spring or that locking bar(encircled with red in pic no. 1). I got over the initial shock and went further. Took the back end out and voila! The round thing with three bits had one bit broken(pic no. 2)

Now, if you notice in pic no. 2, one bit from those three is a bit different. It's somehow bent in a certain shape. Looked on eBay for replacement parts and it strucked me that none of the kits has that round piece with that certain shape.(pic no. 3)

My question(and please, I really need any info) is: where can I find that part? I feel that what I'm finding on eBay is not the good part for me. Further more, do I need to take spring and that long locking bar? I need to know because I want to repair the lock asap.

As I said, any advice is appreciated

yes, but my broken part is not the same with the one from eBay. Would my locking mechanism work with the one from eBay?

Ok yours has the earlier lock/mechanism by the year it should have the one I linked too.

...And she died :sorry:

Before yesterday, the car ran like a dream. Started perfectly, moved like any '99 car but when going over speed bumps, all the lights flickered(including dashboard, interior lights). I said "ok, we'll sort it out".
Today, I put the ignition and....nothing. I try again. Same thing. Either the battery is KO(looks kinda old to me), either there are some seriously electrical problems to the car. Either way...it's not ok.

Again, the car stays :-(

A new battery will come and, after that, test the alternator. If that's not the issue, well, I have a big problem, financially speaking. Meanwhile....some pics of today

By the way, if there are here Polo 6n estate owners interested in parts, soon I'll have a 6n estate only for parts. I will take what I need from it and if someone needs something, just message. All free, of course

And she's alive!! After having some electrical issues(including a new battery), Ellie hit the road. Now she's fine. From time to time, the oil indicator starts flickering and beeping, but I assume that is because the oil dipstick funnel is cracked(still waiting for the part).
Meanwhile, I've rented a garage for her and, at the moment, I am still working to make the garage door work(it has some mechanical issues). Here are some pics from her maiden voyage, after some months of just sitting around

And I've started to sort out the bodywork a bit. Dents, scratches, bigger dents and patches of rust.
I can't say that I'm a professional, but I'm doing my best. In the end, it's my baby.

Untill now, I tackle the front wing problem. A big dent, thanks to a neighbour. Took the paint down, rubbed as hell to bare metal, applied body filler, sanding(geez, I'm sanding the area since 7 in the morning), now comes a thin layer of filler, then again sanding and in the end, filler. And even that one needs sanding. It's 11:15 and my hands are already protesting :D

Pics later(didn't thought to take any pics)

Finally finished the front wing. Now I have to finish the rear damage and figure out how to put back the front bumper
Oh, and Ellie got new clear signal lights :D

Recently, she developed problems at the engine. I'll manage to fix them.

Meanwhile, she got a new wheels and sorted some of the burned bulbs on the rear lights

Finally, I've sorted the starting problems.

She died two weeks ago. Simply didn't want to start. Tried to turn over, but in the end, did not start. Had to let her at work and pay for recovery and a sort of repair. The guys at the garage replaced the coil pack and she started. Realy bad! I was advised that it may have problems at the air flow meter and that I should buy a new air flow meter. Quote: "let her start in her own way....don't rush her and after you can go on the road". REALLY??

But I've felt that the problem was actually somewhere at the plugs/ignition. So I've started to research.

Anyway...today, being sick of waiting a miracle or a solution, I've bought plugs, coil and since I was about to work near the windshield, a new pollen filter. Changed two spark plugs(the others are well under the intake manifold so....they stay there), mount the new coil, change the pollen filter and....the baby started at first key.

Tomorrow I will have a trip with her to see how is going. Hope that everything will be ok.....

Oh, and I've got a curiosity: why the air holes on the plastic cover that comes under the windshield(and goes under the bonet also) are opposite to the pollen filter? In mainland Europe is the same thing, only that the pollen filter and the holes are in the other direction

And back. My apologies to the forum, but the last 5 month have been a bit rough(ID's stolen, embassy things, trips home and back and so on)
Anyway, I had enough. I start to realize that I live in an akward part of England. Still having problems with the gearbox and no one wants to service it. I mean, it's frustrating.

So, here it goes...Is there someone on here who can actually service a Polo 6KV5 automatic gearbox? Untill now, I've encountered all kinds of mechanics like:
1. Just top up the ATF and that's it
2. Change the ATF, but not change the ATF filter
3. Change the ATF and filter, but use any ATF available because, and I quote,"doesn't matter the ATF itself, it's the same thing"
