Help with insurance

Featured Replies

Hi, I'm 21 and drive an L reg 1.0 mk2f.

I just got a letter today saying my insurance got cancelled on the 12th (which was 4 days ago) due to missed payment which they didn't notify me about. Rung them up, the policy can't be reinstated but I can take out a new policy if I pay £300 outstanding + £400 deposit (£2k quote). I don't wanna go with them again in case this all happens again and I don't feel like this is my fault so I don't understand why I'm having to pay out soo much.

My insurance was only £1.3k before since I have no ncb and only got my license on the 12/14. I insured my car in January and have been driving it since. I wasn't notified about the cancellation even though they said they sent out a letter before hand but i never received it. Which meant i have been driving for the last 4 days with no insurance but never got stopped luckily.

Since its been cancelled all my quotes have shot up to 2-3k upwards (flux quoted me 6k) and I'm not willing to pay that much for a £500 car. Also since my insurance got cancelled I'm not going to be getting any ncb at the end of the year.

I'm just looking for advice on what to do because I'm very pissed off right now and can't financially afford these big quotes. Everyone is getting cheaper quotes on newer and more powerful cars and I don't understand how when they're still on their first year of insurance.

I live in an SW11 postcode. If anyone can shed some light on my situation I'd really appreciate it.

In regards to the newer cars they are deemed a lot safer then a 20 year old car. Some also get the 1st years free insurance which I think was popular with the corsa's a couple years back? (I think some places do still offer this) - I'd try to contact the insurance comapny again and speak to one of the managers or try to contact the director and see if they can help in anyway.

I phoned back to find out I was speaking to 2 of the managers. Long story short, I owe them 340, old policy can't be reinstated, can renew it but will be paying an extra £60 a month. Also the whole thing with the cancellation is my fault n there's basically not much they can do unless I keep paying them.

I'm at the point now where I feel to take my polo off the road and get something else that's cheap and newer if the insurance is gonna be this much. I hate new cars but can't stand public transport

Did you miss a payment, or did they fail to take it, that is the important thing I think.

Check your bank balance, check your statements, etc. to see if there was actually an attempt to take the money (I assume it's set up on standing order or direct debit?)

When did you miss the payment, I'd imagine there was a lead time between that and them cancelling your insurance - did they not try another method of contacting you? Indeed, can they prove they did try to contact you?

You're probably going to have to SORN the Mk3 whilst you get it all sorted, but I'd be speaking to your local Citizens Advise Bureau and either the industry regulator or ombudsman regarding their conduct.

I missed a payment but we had agreed on a deadline for when the payment needs to be made by. That was the 17th which is tommorow. On they're system they've got notes saying it was the 10th but then they told me I had up until the 7pm on the 3rd. So many different dates, times and deadlines.

They said they couldn't contact me due to my phone being down but I gave them a new number on the third. Even today iv had to give them the same number twice because it wasn't updated still.

I cancelled the direct debit due too issues with my bank and have been paying manually and was actually planning to pay today but its too late.

I agree with the sorn, just need somewhere to store the car. I shall have a word with the citizens advise and most prolly an ombudsman about this also.

Get on the phone to the insurance regulation authority asap.

Also, ask for copies of all the calls.

Have a look at diamond they were cheap for me when I was 19 on my 6n. It was £720 with 1 years NCB but I tested putting in 0 NCB and it only went up by about £100.

You need to add parents/guardians if you can.

But to be honest a lot of it is postcodes now. It's £500 cheaper on my mom's postcode than my dad's and they live less than a mile apart :pardon:

Ask them who they're regulated by and for contact details. It's amazing how fast the cheeky nice people can change their tune when you realise you're not just going to roll over.

Trust me, I had it twice with Adrian flux trying to make up reasons to invalidate my cover and keep as much money as they felt like.
