I recently bought a car at auction to use as an engine donor, only when I went to pick it up I saw it was super clean and way better then our car. So I swapped all the "good" bits over and scrapped our old car.

I now want to sell the car as we don't need it, I never received any paper work for it from the auction only the receipt. It was an impulse buy and I didn't really read the listing and as far as I know it is a cat c write off (tiny damage to rear quarter)

Is there any way to check?

I have read that a vehicle Enquiry should be done, but that doesn't say anything about any write off categories etc. Should/would it?

I can go to the post office and pay for a logbook, but I'd rather not if it means I will only receive a letter in 2 weeks time as I'd rather just sell as is and let the new keeper do that.

The V5 will most likely show this, it may of also had a VIC check after this accident. Maybe there are records.

If you have a smart phone download the app 'MyCarCheck'

This will do a basic history check for £2.99 which includes if it has previously been written off and it gives you the class and the date.

Kiwi of-coupe, just the one I was looking for I did use them in the past but couldn't remember the name. Will give them a shot hopefully it will confirm my doubts and be all clear :)

Apertures, I would usually look on the logbook, but it didn't come with one, I only got the receipt and the keys where cable tied to the car :)

I did buy a car a month ago for my sister that was defiantly cat c and that had to go for a vic, but they gave my the logbook I think (or maybe half of it?) which made this on a little strange.

I will give the app a shot and see what it says.

As for the logbook, would I defiantly have to pay for a replacement? Or has that changed recently? I haven't lost it and I am the new keeper.

If it is a cat C it might still be the case you can't get a logbook until after a VIC check?

If you fill out an advert (like you're about to sell the car) on autotrader, it will tell you if it's a cat c or not.

And it's free.

I would say as there was no V5 from the auction, it was a cat c, as it has to be surrendered on it being written off and can only be replaced after it has been inspected

I did a hip check on mycarcheck and everything was fine except it says it was written off last month. The logbook does in fact have to be sour rendered to the insurance company in order to make the claim.

Dougster21 - I read the same thing but when I tried I couldn't see anything about it, I could only get to the payment screen. Maybe it didn't work because I was using iOS not windows?

Kiwi I-coupe if I applied for one I would just receive a letter saying I have to take it for the test, where they will give you a certificate to include with the logbook application so without this they will not send a logbook.

The damage to the car was literally a bump and this all seems way over the top but hey ho :)

Does anyone know if the fee still applies for a new log book in this case?
