you need to take the arch liner out and put your hand in there to free it, a wire also goes into the bulk head for the radio

Thanks- managed to get the arch off and locate the aerial. How does the aerial come out from the bonnet and how is a new aerial wired into the car?

Unscrewing the nut should free the old aerial.

The down-lead passes through rubber grommets in the wheel arch and through the bulkhead into the cars interior.

In order to achieve good interference screening, the outer part of the new aerial (where it contacts the underside of the wing) should be metal-to-metal contact with the wing itself, to achieve this, you may have to scrape away paint/underseal or whatever is there from the underside of the wing.

Once the new aerial is in place, you then need to coat the area with some form of protective - as it is not in direct firing line of water and dirt from the revolving tyre (due to the liner that you have removed) you could use something like 'Waxoil', but whatever you use, make sure that all bare metal is well covered.

The down-lead of the new aerial has a plug on it which plugs directly into the radio socket - or you might find that your radio has a short fly-lead on it with a socket on the end - whichever, just remove the old plug (it pulls straight out) and push in the new one.

If you examine your radio closely, you might find that there is a small screw head for 'trimming' the aerial. If you can find this, pull the aerial out to its fullest extent, tune the radio to a fairly weak signal (station) and turn said trimming screw slightly to obtain the best results.
