This year's insurance for me is coming to an end, so I'll be looking at alternatives to the comparison-sites to see if I can get a mod-friendly policy at a good price.

I've seen mention of power-limited policies on here and wondered how they work in terms of declaring/proving the exact power, or whether an estimate is fine?

For instance, my standard H-reg Polo GT is of course 75bhp on paper but could be anywhere +/- 10% now; if I bring it to the usual 90-100bhp estimate with bolt-on mods, it could be slightly over 100BHP I guess. Is proof like a dyno readout needed after the mods, or is an estimate fine based on wisdom attained through forums and the like?

I had a brief look on here for an answer, but of course if my query's been covered before let me know and I'll have a more thorough search.

I dont know if its relevant in this case, but I've been charged my estimated % increase over standard when I've modified cars.

So 40% on a 40% power increase - but I think its front loaded so you would pay a certain amount extra for modifying and lowering in particular, then anything else follows the % rule. Just my experiences.

Ah, OK. So when calling up whoever you declare your mods and what you think the approximate power would be (at the wheels, I take it).

I thought it might be more formal or technical, especially if you're going to be declaring lots of significant mods with huge gains. Maybe on a Polo GT, not so much..

So it'd be like: chip; Golf GTi AFM (maybe); 4-branch; custom cat-back; estimate 90bhp or so. And you're away.

If you're talking about Brentacre I think the lowest band they do is 100hp anyway.

I've always gone for output at the flywheel as that's higher.

I'm not entirely sure how it works. Whether it's done on trust, or if you have an accident they'd put your car on a RR or what.

I just make sure my power limits higher than what my car is, and have several RR print outs to prove that.
