hi i have a vw polo 6n2 and there is no power going to the alternator to charge my battery when i can get the car running. I've had the AA out to it as it broke down on me and they say its a wire to the starter motor that wont start my car? I'm just wondering if any one on here has had the same problem?

You seem to be describing two problems? not starting & not charging??

The main battery positive lead goes direct to the battery and then when the solenoid is engaged it powers the starter motor, so you might have a problem with the small thin wire going to the starter motor solenoid (not uncommon)

The alternator not charging could be the alternator itself or again a common problem is the thin blue wire going to it breaks stopping it charging ( is the battery light ON with the engine running?)

Having said all that it could just be a duff battery !!

The AA wasn't much help then! You would have thought that they would at least have shown you which wire was broken.

Did they attempt to clean the terminals on the battery and main earth points?

If not, it might pay just to spend a few minutes checking and cleaning them.

When you say 'that there is no power going to the alternator', do you mean that there is no voltage at the (thick) alternator cable connection? Or as Nige suggests, the thin blue one - if the latter, you will only have voltage there when the ignition is switched 'on'.
