Mk2f Polo GT won't start/running rough

Featured Replies

Fingers crossed.

I think we'll have to have a little party if she runs :)

  • have you tried driving those 300 miles in reverse to see if the probelm solves itself?

  • I've had a gt refuse to start due to ecu faliure

  • Checked the timing today and it was out by about a tooth so I've corrected that. Also at TDC the rotor arm was pointing at the lead for cylinder 3 but I think it's meant to be pointing at cylinder 1 s

I know I sure as hell will!!!

Battery must be charged by now....

  • Author

Yep haha battery is charged now but I haven't had the chance to have another look at it yet (drowning in uni work) but I have most off today free so I'll have another go

Right, finally got it running! (And had a little party) so it starts and it runs which is great! The original problem (from 4 pages ago) still seems to be there, it still doesn't like to idle from cold and still bogs down when revving. I'm hoping once I take it out for as little blast it will clear it's throat and be fine

Ha ha ! :) Brilliant :) Thats good news. Must have given you a bit of a buzz. Nice one.

Been out for a run and still isn't right, can be coaxed into life but won't idle by itself until warm. It was still bogging but it was also leaking fuel, I've fixed that now

When I unplug the throttle pot it picks up faster and runs smoother. Guessing this means that sensor is at fault? Can I run with bit unplugged or will that mess stuff up?

Check engine earths, even if they look ok clean the contact points, grab a jump lead and earth it more as well. Was it a brand new dizzy? Hall senders usually fail, the wiring on them goes shit, have a look

Plug the TPS back in and unplug the lambda, see if that makes the problem better or worse.

Still 3 replacement TPSs available through the club shop if it turns out you do need one.

Oh also have you reset the base timing?

  • Author

Engine earth's are all clean and new. The dizzy isn't new but I've tested it and it's fine. Unplugging the lambda didn't seem to do anything.

What do you mean by reset the base timing?

  • Author

If it's on any help, when unplugging the blue temp sender the revs die and the engine nearly cuts out. Temp sender is brand new

OK that means the ECU isn't happy with something.

First thing to check is the base timing. Full explanation of it can be seen here http://www.clubpolo.co.uk/forum/index.php?showtopic=109802

One thing to remember if you unplug the blue temp sender and the engine does cut out, DO NOT restart it with the sender still unplugged.

Do you know anyone else with a working GT that you could borrow the TPS from to confirm if that is the issue?

I don't have a timing light but the dizzy is lined up with where it was and it had previously been timed with a light and the idle speed is correct.

Unfortunately I don't know any other gt owners, is there a way to get around it or should I just buy one to check?

I've been out for a drive with the TPS unplugged and it was better but still down on power by a lot. If you hold it at fixed revs (in gear) you can feel it almost pulsing and trying to have full power but it just can't do it

Have you compression tested the old girl

  • Author

Not since all the problems started, I did before she started messing up. I figured it has to have compression because it runs and drives and the timing wasn't very far out. Obviously I can't say for certain though :)

  • Author

It almost sounds and feels as though it's running on 3 cylinders. I'm planning on moving the distributor around a bit and see if that helps because that's something that's free haha

Also (just supplying as much info as I can now) it's using a LOT of fuel. Not had a chance to play with the dizzy yet but seen a lot of people complaining about similar problems being caused by dodgy TPS. However if this was the only problem I would've thought it would be fine with TPS unplugged? I've also seen comments about bad lambda earth causing all sorts of problems

You really don't want to be playing with the dizzy without a timing light. Also with the ECU not being happy with a sensor or having the TPS unplugged then I'm not sure if the ECU will even enter into service mode for you to adjust the timing.

  • Author

I've got a reference mark on it for where it was when it was timed up properly. To be honest I don't think it would go into service mode as it just tries to die with the blue sender unplugged. Just sort of clutching at straws haha. My next thought is to wiggle the actual throttle body around (as suggested earlier) and see if that changes anything. Presumably if it does then it's a bad gasket causing an air leak?

  • Author

Wiggled the TB and it didn't affect anything. Took out MAF plug and nothing happened but bit died when I plugged it back in. No sparks coming off of leads or anything. Seems to accelerate normally on half throttle and then bog when the 2nd butterfly opens up

I'd be looking into getting it hooked up onto a scan tool.

The ECU and diagnostics aren't great on these but it will give you a better clue than just unplugging sensors.

  • Author

Ah right OK, I suppose it's the best/fastest way to see what sensors are playing up. I don't have a scanner but a garage near me has got the right kit. I'll pop into them tomorrow and see what they can do for me

  • Author

It's booked in at the garage for next week. It's starting much easier every time now, still down on power and noe then revs drop when braking
