My cold air is quite poor and the aircon doesn't make much difference(engages and works)

What about the pollen filter? is it in good condition and not obstructed?

Being low on gas will prevent the compressor clutch from engaging, so as PoloD says, it could need regassing - check the clutch visually.

Is the condenser (at the front of the car) clear of obstruction?

The aircon was re gassed not long ago and engages,the pollen filters new.

It's colder when the car engines cold or been in the shade lol but it's like the black paint reflects the heat

Black or not the air con system should both cool and dehumidify the interior in minutes and create a different climate inside.

If the air on system has a fault it will show up on vagcom, it's not uncommon for the pressure switch to fail and cut power to the clutch, and thus no AC.

There is a vent in the drivers side rear quarter corner behind the styrofoam holder for the central locking pump and if this is obstructed etc it won't let the wire pas through the cabin and mean almost zero air flow. Try opening the boot and let the car run for a while at full fan speed and on cold, see if it gets cool in the front.

As poloD suggested above, I would take it to an AC specialist and have them check the gas situation. It's usually free on the basis that if its low you will use them to refill it. It is possible that you have a leak and the gas is now gone. They can add dyes to the refrigerant or into a vacuum and this will show any leaks.

Yeah I understand that,but without the air con turned on its warm air,the aircon will only make it cold if it's already cold on the normall heater system

On a hot UK day, the air will blow warm regardless of your settings UNLESS the air con is on.

As mentioned previously - check your not stuck on recycle and that the hot/cold valve/flap is operating correctly.

Once you've established that is correct - follow advice above for checking Air Con clutch upwards.

Do not expect cold air from the car without the air con on - I'm just back from warm climes where the steering wheel is to hot to hold and the 'cold' air blows at about 30 degrees when the car has been in the sun. The ambient was only in the 20's but the dash/wheel/air system had warmed way beyond that.

You'll find without AC it won't ever be cold. It will be level with outside temp so you'll see no difference, or if it's like the setup on my old scirocco you'll get the engine heat coming in even when cold setting is selected and it's hotter then the outside temp. Either fix your aircon or open your windows when you drive

The "cold" air is sucked in the the scuttle area. It shouldn't get much engine heat into it as its sealed off from the engine bay.

As above the air will be equal to the outside temperature so in our lovely winter the cold setting would be almost as cold as when the AC is on, only the air will be slightly damp as it hasn't been dried by the AC.

I have take apart a good few of these heater boxes for my current project and there really isn't much to go wrong on the manual type ones.

The only thing you can really do to try and rectify it is to maybe take out the heater control and check to see if the cable is held in place properly as sometimes the outer sheith can come off the clip and won't allow the inner cable to move properly.
