AFH: gearbox 85

I was doing 60mph in 4th gear. and i braked hard on overun.

pressed clutch and gear would get out of 4th. as if the clutch hadnt moved enough.

Something happened on my braking hard in gear.

seemed to then be stiff trying to get it into and out of 4th and 5th whilst driving home which lucky was 1/4 of a mile away.

In driveway with the car stopped and switched off it seems stiff getting it into 4th n out of it.

Biting point of pedal seems to be lower towards the end.

How can a cable stretch like that. There does not seem to be much slack in the pedal.

Is it safe to further tension the clutch cable?

My guess is that you have a weak engine/gearbox mounting, which moved under hard braking - suggest that you check the condition of mountings and replace if required.

The clutch adjustment needs to be reasonably correct, do not try to 'compensate' for some other problem by incorrectly setting the clutch adjustment.

Although not strictly as per book, my method of checking the clutch adjustment, is from the gearbox end.

If you grasp the clutch lever (the bit that the cable connects to) and attempt to move it in line with the cable, there should be about 6 mm 'free play' - if needs be, adjust the cable to obtain that amount.

Too much free play, and you will have difficulty in engaging gears. Too little, and you run the risk of the clutch slipping.

If the mountings are OK and the clutch adjustment is correct, your problem may be due to the gear linkage being out of adjustment, but check the other two above items first, as I would think that will overcome your problem.

It has sorted it self out. I just take it easy now. The cable must have been stretched or something else has gone back into position where it should be. The biting point seems higher now back to where it usually is.
