What is everyones take on this Blue Motion technology? Or any other Eco technology being brought out just now.

I personally never thought much of the hype, thought it was all just a marketing ploy to get more people in Diesel cars. Since they are more expensive to buy and until recently the fuel itself was more expensive.

But at the weekend I was down in London and I hired a car for the weekend, turned out to be a Golf 1.6 TDI Blue Motion thing. Now everyone knows that the fastest car in the world is a hire car...

We did a mixture of town, country, heavy traffic and motorway over the weekend totalling around 90 miles. The fuel gauge never even moved off the full mark. Before I took it back I thought I'd better top it up just to be safe and could only get £8 of Diesel in the tank....£8!!! Works out with the price I paid about 56mpg.

56MPG from a car that was not driven in the most economical fashion at all....how is that even possible?

Well I have a polo bluemotion and it can get driven hard on way to work at night when I'm running late, staying 90 or above on motorway and stop starting driving on the small roads in central London and I still touch over 40mpg which was considered great a few years ago for economical driving in most cars.

I drive modern cars at work like a new focus and it drinks it in comparison and that is a 13 plate 1.6 diesel which is supposed to be good on fuel

I'm sure that I read about my polo bluemotions engine having slightly rounded pistons even to reduce friction although that could be bollocks. Other than that the gearing is different but stop start is the only major thing I think that differs with bluemotion tech and non bluemotion tech

It's all a bit overrated.

I use my £700 ibiza 1.9tdi for work. I load it up with whatever I need to move, drive the nuts of it and get 50mpg all day. Only downside is my tax costs a bit more. The upside is I haven't got all that dpf and commonrail stuff waiting to go wrong.

I hear over and over that the 1.9 turbo lump is the best diesel to go for in the vw line up. My grandad had a few 1.9tdis and he's had about 50+ vws yet he swears for a balance of economy and power it's the best one there is.

I sometimes wish I had got the 9n gt tdi with 130bhp, looks good goes like the nuts and I wouldn't have sacrificed too much on the economy side

Last week I went to look at an 06 Octavia with the 1.9tdi it had 330,000 on the clock it had been serviced regularly and the engine sounded as sweet as any oil burner does

Bet it was a bargain because of the high mileage as well!

£900 it was an ex taxi but it looked like someone had used it for baseball practice, every panel needed replacing!! it explained why there were no photos in the advert

If you want proper fuel economy, dad has a mark 1 fabia sdi. It gets a fairly steady 65mpg.

My experience with diseasels is limited to modern BMWs and the odd Audi, with the BMWs unless you drive them like a granny then 40-45mpg is about the best you will get out of the 2.0 versions. And the Audi's I've driven are much and such the same.

I was expecting the same from the Golf if not a bit less as it did see a good thrashing round the country roads, and I've never known a Diesel to be good in town traffic...usually worse than a petrol.

I'd be interested to see how a similar car fairs if it were taken for a few laps round a track....

Also I'm not usually too fussed on economy, hence why I drive an M3 and a Turbo'd Polo, but when a car delivers 56mpg after a hard drive it makes you think about it.
