Some time ago the outer (dip beam) bulb blew on the O/S headlight of our car. It was a dark and stormy night and I had to get the light working for my wife to get to work next day.

Picture me, if you will, with a pencil torch in my mouth, trying to aim its feeble light somewhere near the inboard end of the headlight and with rain streaming down my glasses. I had a bit of a struggle getting the bulb out (as you do . . . ) and when I finally got it out a little flat shiny springy bit launched itself into the night . . .

No idea where it finally ended up cos I sure as hell couldn't find it so I just had to stick the new bulb in the holder and shove in into the aperture in the headlight. Fully floating would be an appropriate description of its state - it was spotting planes for a while but then settled itself down to more or less road level.

That was in the early Spring and of course we haven't been using the headlights so much over the Summer, but I suddenly twigged today that it's MOT time as the tax reminder just dropped through the letter-box . . . Not a cat's chance of a pass with the light like that, obviously!

Knowing VW, it obviously couldn't be a simple as buying whatever springy bit I lost - it's going to involve buying a unit of some description. Question is, does that part come with the headlight or the bulb holder? I've had a look on eBay and one seller can supply replacement bulb holders for VWs at a reasonable price, otherwise it's a headlight at an unreasonable price.

Sorry to be so vague as to what disappeared but I only caught a glimpse of it in the dark.

There is nothing showing in the parts listing, so it'll be a complete headlight from VW !!!

I'd have a look in a breakers yard, chances are it's the same part on other VAG models of a similar age if you can't find a 9N3 in the yard

There are 9n3s breaking on eBay. In fact, a reasonable passenger side unit for £20.
