Not been on for a while, been busy playing with my polo! Still got a problem with ABS. The light comes on and goes out under start up so seems ok and under normal braking on damp roads I may get the ABS activate (indicating all is well?) However, recently on 2 heavy braking situations I get the front passanger wheel lock up completely, screech to a halt and stall. It feels like the wheel doesnt want to 'unbrake'. So is this a sticky caliper or a deeper ABS problem?

As I said the ABS light appears to be behaving. Your help always appreciated!!

Forgot to mention car has had a replacement pump/module repair, pedal goes to floor when ABS operates!!

When you fitted the pump unit, did you use VCDS when you bled the system?? as the pedal shouldn't be going to the floor !!

Are there any fault code that might apply to ABS?

What do you have to do (if anything) to get the locked up FNS brake to release?

When the pedal 'goes to the floor after ABS operation', does it 'pump up' (as if it were pushing out wheel pistons) or does it feel 'spongy' (as if there was air in the system? Also at this time, does the fluid level rise in the reservoir?

Hi guys, the dealer i got the car from did the work so assume did not bleed properly, once car has stopped you just drive off but as it is stopping it just feels grabby like the abs isnt working. Pedal feels spongy and a bit more travel than i'd like for an all disc system. Like I said under normal use it all seems ok, it's just those occasional hard braking moments (when you hope the ABS will do it's job) Not aware of any codes.

You need to use VCDS/Vagcom to put the pump unit into maintenance mode to bleed the system correctly, and as the pedal is going to the floor on occasions it looks like there is still air in the system that needs to be sorted asap or even quicker, before you have an accident !!!

I had a similar problem with a golf. It was a right pain in the arse and in the end I had replaced every part of the brake system and used over a gallon of fluid. I gave up and brought it to a garage (first time I've done this in years) and they bled it in a few minutes and after a test drive the brakes where amazing so I would advise bringing it somewhere that knows about these cars.

Hi guys, just an update on the polo, it is going into a trusted local indy who have already scanned the car. There are no ABS or electrical faults at all. They suspect a tired master cylinder as the main problem. Being picked up on tuesday so we will see what occurs.

I trust these guys so all should be well.

Got car back from indy yesterday, she's all good now, they were right on the money. a new master cylinder/fluid/bleed and now we stop with no drama!!

Just re-reading your post, the two occasions when just one wheel locked up, reminds me of a case a while back, where a front brake hose with (presumably) a 'flap' of rubber inside which was acting as a one-way valve and keeping that single brake 'on'.
